Eau Claire debuts PX-finished Canadian single malt

Alberta-based Eau Claire Distillery has launched a premium Pedro Ximénez (PX) Sherry cask-finished Canadian single malt under its Ploughman’s label.

The new flagship expression seeks to showcase Canadian terroir, careful maturation, and cask selection at its best.

David Farran, founder and president of Eau Claire Distillery, explained: “Ploughman’s represents the culmination of years of learning and refinement. It’s a whisky that reflects our belief in Alberta as a serious place to make single malt, not by forcing attention, but by letting the process speak for itself.”

Ploughman’s is made with 100% Alberta malted barley, including horse-farmed grain.

Created by master distiller Daniel Gowrie, the whisky is aged in ex-Bourbon and European oak casks, and finished in PX Sherry casks from Ximénez-Spínola in Jerez.

Bottled at 46% ABV, the whisky presents aromas of toasted oak, espresso, dark chocolate, and dates. On the palate, it offers European oak spice, roasted walnuts, honey, cherries, raisins, dark cocoa, and dried fruits.

Gowrie said: “Global interest in Canadian single malt continues to grow, with credibility established thoughtfully over time. Ploughman’s reflects a deliberate approach, from barley selection to finishing, that allows the whisky to stand on its own merits.”

With a limited quantity available, the whisky is presented in a bottle with a mountain on the bottom, representing the distillery’s water source.

Ploughman’s Single Malt Whisky is available online through Eau Claire Distillery, while supplies last, and at the distillery in Turner Valley, priced at CA$199.95 (US$146).

Eau Claire Distillery was established in 2014. Its portfolio covers a range of spirits, including Rupert’s whisky, Stampede Rye, Parlour gin, and Three Point vodka.
