Pennsylvania hosts rare whiskey lottery
The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) is offering residents and licensees the chance to purchase bottles of rare American whiskeys from Van Winkle, Buffalo Trace’s Antique Collection and EH Taylor.
The PLCB regulates the distribution of alcohol in Pennsylvania and operates Fine Wine & Good Spirits stores across the state.
The government-run agency will host three separate lotteries for Van Winkle, Buffalo Trace and EH Taylor, which are all produced by New Orleans-based drinks firm Sazerac.
There are 1,434 bottles of whiskey up for grabs.
The first lottery, comprised of Buffalo Trace Antique Collection bottles, includes Sazerac Straight Rye Whiskey 18 Year Old, a 17-year-old Eagle Rare Bourbon, William Larue Weller Straight Bourbon Barrel Proof, George T Stagg Straight Bourbon Barrel Proof and Thomas H Handy Sazerac Straight Rye Whiskey Barrel Proof. Each Buffalo Trace whiskey is priced at US$149.99 per 750ml bottle.
The second lottery will offer 1,062 bottles of Kentucky whiskeys produced by Pappy Van Winkle’s grandson using recipes that date back four generations.
This sweepstake includes 15-year-old, 20-year-old and 23-year-old Bourbons from Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve. The 15-year-old is priced at US$199.99, the 20-year-old at US$319.99 and the 23-year-old at US$449.99.
Completing the collection is Old Rip Van Winkle Handmade Straight Bourbon 10 Year Old (US$129.99) and Van Winkle Special Reserve Straight Bourbon 12 Year Old (US$149.99).
The third and final lottery will feature 48 bottles of a limited edition Colonel EH Taylor Jr Straight Bourbon Bottled in Bond, priced at US$149.99 each. Of the allocation, 36 are for consumers while 12 have been designated to licensees.
Pennsylvanian residents aged 21 and over can opt in to all three lotteries, with purchases limited to one bottle per customer for each collection. Winners will be selected at random through a computer programme and will be notified by email.
Limited to one entry per household, residents have until 5pm EST on Friday 16 January to enter the lotteries via the Fine Wine & Good Spirits website.
