Glencadam whisky gets makeover

Angus Dundee Distillers has refreshed the design of its Glencadam single malt and released a 17-year-old whisky finished in Calvados casks.

Glencadam’s new packaging follows the distillery’s 200th anniversary celebration last year and the opening of its first visitor centre in Brechin.

Designed to showcase the single malt’s premium global positioning, the updated appearance adds a modern touch to the brand.

The new packaging will launch this month on four expressions: Glencadam 10-year-old, 15-year-old, Reserva PX, and a new 17-year-old Réserve de Calvados cask finish. The rest of the range will follow in the coming weeks.

Each tube showcases the cask maturation process and tasting notes to help customers make informed selections at the point of purchase.

Hand-drawn illustrations by Edinburgh-based artist Andrew Davidson, known for his work on the Harry Potter book series, depict how the distillery would have looked when it was founded in 1825.

Iain Forteath, master blender of Glencadam, explained: “This new packaging represents evolution, not reinvention. Our time-honoured production methods, elegant house style and commitment to traditional craftsmanship remain unchanged.

“What has changed is how we tell our story, with a confident new look that celebrates both our heritage and the quality of the exceptional whisky we make.”

The new limited edition 17-year-old Réserve de Calvados cask finish is initially matured in ex-Bourbon American oak casks before being finished in premium Calvados barrels sourced from Normandy, France.

Offered at 46% ABV, the single malt displays aromas of baked apples, heather honey, sugared almonds, vanilla sponge cake, cocoa powder, and chamomile. On the palate, it offers layers of apple strudel, spiced fruits, butterscotch, stem ginger, dark chocolate, candied orange, and clove rock.

Forteath commented on the new release: “I am really excited to unveil this special bottling of our Glencadam whisky. This is the first time we have released a whisky matured in Calvados casks, and the flavours and complexities imparted by these special barriques are both unique and delicious.

“The elegant orchard fruit and sweet spice notes imparted from the Calvados are a wonderful complement to the signature fruitiness of Glencadam whisky, and I feel this expression really showcases the merits of both of these time-honoured spirits.”

Limited to 6,360 individually numbered bottles, the 17-year-old expression retails for £140 (US$188).
