TWE reveals 440,000 people choose to ‘say it with booze’
By Georgie CollinsSpirits retailer The Whisky Exchange (TWE) has released data from its bottle engraving service, revealing just how many of us choose to get our words across with booze on special occasions.

TWE’s engraving service offers consumers the option to add a personal touch to a special gift, with 130 different bottles available to choose from for the service.
But what drinks do people choose, and for what occasions? TWE has delved through the records of more than 44,000 bottles it has engraved in the past five years to find out.
The data shows that the most popular occasion for customers to choose to mark with an engraved bottle is birthdays, with 30% of total orders. This is followed by 16% for Christmas, 14% for weddings, 10% for general ‘thank yous’, and 6% for retirements.
From customers engraving bottles as a Christmas gift, 34% chose a single malt Scotch whisky, 16% chose a blended Scotch whisky, and 11% chose American whiskey.
Meanwhile, 10% opt for Champagne. However, the sparkling wine is the top choice for those choosing to propose to their partner with an engraved bottle.

Of the more than 130 different bottles available to engrave at TWE, Johnnie Walker Blue Label stands out at the favourite, with 5,640 engraved bottles sold to date.
This is followed by Laurent Perrier Rose NV, with 3,191 engraved bottles sold, and Jack Daniel’s Barrel Select, which has seen 2,373 engraved bottles sold.
Lagavulin Distiller’s Edition has also proved popular, clocking in at 2,085 engraved bottles sold, while 1,209 bottles of Jack Daniel’s Gentleman Jack have been chosen.
TWE has also shared some of the standout phrases chosen for engraving on its bottles, from groomsman requests: ‘James, can I take you away from COD for one day to be my groomsman? – to new home greetings: ‘Opening the door of your new home is worth a shot or two.’
The bottle engraving service is available online or in-store at The Whisky Exchange Great Portland Street.
