Salford Rum launches marmalade flavour with Duerr’s

Manchester-based Salford Rum has teamed up with English marmalade maker Duerr’s on a limited edition expression inspired by the classic English breakfast of marmalade on toast.

Founded in 1881 and also hailing from Manchester, Duerr & Sons is one of the oldest family-owned jam and marmalade producers in England.

In this collaboration for the Christmas season, the team at Salford Rum has distilled Duerr’s Fine Cut Seville Orange Marmalade in a white molasses-based rum from Guyana. The rest of the recipe includes fresh orange peel, fresh lemon peel, and almond.

The rum is finished with sugar and some more orange and ginger to make it taste ‘just like the marmalade but with a boozy kick’, which the Salford team said brings Duerr’s signature flavour to life in a warm, unexpected Christmas tipple.

Tommy Gaughan, co-founder of Salford Rum, said: “This limited edition marmalade rum, created and distilled in the shadows of the old Salford docks, is set to be a sure fire hit with both rum and marmalade lovers this Christmas.

“It’s been incredible collaborating with a Greater Manchester institution such as Duerr’s, which has such a rich heritage in the region. As always, we encourage shoppers to act quickly if they want to bag a bottle as we are sure they will sell out fast.”

Salford x Duerr’s Marmalade Rum will be available from 14 December via Salford Rum’s website. Priced at £42 (US$56), it has an ABV of 37.5%.

The expression is recommended in serves such as a Spiked Ginger Ale or Hot/Cold Apple Juice, as well as a hero recipe called Merry Marmalade, which combines the rum with Velvet Falernum liqueur, lemon juice, and a teaspoon of Duerr’s Orange & Ginger Marmalade.

The collaboration forms part of Duerr’s mission make marmalade more appealing to Gen Z consumers, ‘reminding people why they love marmalade’.

Richard Duerr, managing director at F.Duerr & Sons, said: “Marmalade is at the heart of who we are, so seeing our original recipe reimagined into a rum has been very exciting. Working with Salford Rum allowed us to create something new together that brings to life our flavours for a whole new audience.

“Salford Rum have captured the bright, warming and unmistakably Duerr’s flavour whilst celebrating their own unique product and rum style – it is the perfect Christmas treat.”

Earlier this year, The Spirits Business caught up with Gaughan, who spoke about Salford Rum’s aims of rivalling ‘the big boys’ in the UK following a crowdfund where the initial £250,000 target was reached within an hour.
