Levenbank debuts Scottish rum Cú Mara
By Lauren BowesPremium rum brand Cú Mara is made with Caribbean sugarcane molasses and water from the Scottish Highlands.

The brand is from the production team behind Loch Lomond Brewery and Levenbank Distillery and launches with a golden and a spiced rum.
Cú Mara takes its name and inspiration from coastal folklore and the sea fable of the ‘Keeper of Lost Souls’. The brand draws on ocean imagery, intended to evoke a ‘sense of depth and discovery’.
The brand plans to create a dark and navy-strength rum in time, as well as limited edition expressions that explore flavour profiles and cask types. It will lean on the cask stores from Levenbank Distillery, which is located in Dumbarton near the banks of the River Leven.
Both rums have an ABV of 40% and retail for £40 (US$53).
Cú Mara Scottish Spiced Rum is said to have a ‘complex’ aroma with notes of ‘sweet vanilla’ and ‘cinnamon and cloves’. Meanwhile, the Golden Rum has a ‘jammy fruit character’ with notes of ‘dried apricots and tropical fruits’.
Euan MacEachern, head of production at Loch Lomond Brewery, said: “The rum market is seeing strong growth and we saw an opportunity to create something distinct and extend our portfolio in a fresh and exciting way. A premium, small-batch Scottish rum that combines classic Caribbean inspiration with our own very distinct production style.”
Levenbank Distillery was founded in early 2025. It creates three core styles of Lowland single malt using a range of barley and yeast strains from beer styles and specialities like crystal and chocolate malts.
Its first single malts are due to be released in 2030/31.
As well as whisky and rum, Levenbank produces gin and vodka under the West Highland Spirits brand.
