Desolas Mezcal debuts single barrel añejo series
By Miona MadsenFemale-founded Desolas Mezcal has unveiled a single barrel añejo made with Salmiana agave, which it calls a ‘first of its kind’ expression.

The aged mezcal marks the launch of the brand’s single-barrel añejo series, which pays tribute to the state of San Luis Potosí.
Made from Salmiana agave, the añejo is the brand’s second aged mezcal, following last month’s release of Desolas Reposado.
Sammy Halpern, chief strategy officer of Desolas, said: “Single barrel releases are a rarity in the mezcal world. Our Single Barrel Añejo is bold, refined, and distinctive.
“Each barrel brings its own character, transforming our bright, botanical mezcal into something truly one of a kind. Drawing on my experience in the liquor industry and the world of whisky, GG (Mirvis) and I collaborated on this beautiful experiment – one that surprised us both. It is Desolas, reinvented and reimagined.”
Desolas Single Barrel Añejo was aged for 31 months in two separate ex-Bourbon barrels.
One barrel was placed at the top of the ageing facility, while the other was placed at the bottom of the warehouse, to create distinct microclimates during ageing.
Each barrel was bottled individually at its full barrel strength of 52% ABV and is designed to be enjoyed neat.
Barrel One, named Golden Horizon, produced a mezcal with ‘a vibrant and youthful’ flavour profile despite its age, yielding a total of 230 bottles.
Barrel Two, called Ember Sol, resulted in a mezcal that showcased ‘exceptional barrel ageing with rich sweetness and spice’, yielding 206 bottles.
To stand out from the botanical green of Blanco, Desolas collaborated with a Mexican artist to create a new black-and-white ceramic bottle design.
The mezcal will launch in December with each bottle hand-numbered to indicate its specific barrel.
The release aims to cater to both collectors and connoisseurs, and has a retail price of US$199.99.
