Benriach unveils 31YO Shades of Smoke

Brown-Forman-owned Benriach Distillery has partnered with generative artist Stefano Contiero to create a 31-year-old limited edition single malt, the first expression in its new Shades of Smoke collection.

Benriach Shades of Smoke collection explores the distillery’s ‘sweeter style of smoky whisky’

Paired with Contiero’s ‘evocative artwork’, the collection’s inaugural release, 31-year-old vintage single malt, is said to celebrate the elegant side of Benriach’s smoky profile.

The single malt was laid down in the spring and summer of 1994, the same year the distillery increased production of a ‘sweeter style of smoky whisky’.

Master blender Rachel Barrie commented: “Stefano’s visual artistry beautifully complements the ethereal nature of this remarkable Benriach vintage. After 31 years of maturation, the expression offers a moment of elegant indulgence on the palate, where gentle juniper smoke circles softly kiss layers of luscious fruit.

“Imagine indulging in chocolate clouds spiked with hibiscus and spiced orange caramel  all enveloped in the gentle, sophisticated whisper of Speyside smoke.”

Commissioned specifically for the limited release, the original digital artwork by Italian-Dominican artist Contiero is inspired by tasting and depicts airy cloud colours emerging like smoke. The moving artwork was captured at various moments to create different versions of the packaging.

Contiero said: “Tasting alongside Rachel was instrumental in unlocking a deeper understanding of the whisky’s composition and the playful energy behind its creation.

“It gave me insight into the craftsmanship and layering of flavours, which I sought to reinterpret in my generative algorithm, allowing forms and colours to emerge organically, much like how the whisky’s notes unfold over time.”

Offered at 48.1% ABV, Benriach Shades of Smoke Edition One will have a recommended retail price of £700 (US$921).

The limited release will be available soon in the UK, Germany, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland, Singapore, Australia, the US, and global travel retail.

In the UK, the Shades of Smoke will be available at The Whisky Shop in 2026, with pre-orders currently open.

Last year, Benriach released a 50-year-old single malt, its oldest to date, exclusively for the travel retail market.
