How many water balloons do you think you can fill with the world’s largest cocktail?

We’re talking cocktails served by the gallon, Cognacs older than some civilisations, and Scotch bottles so massive they need forklifts.

These aren’t your average Friday-night pours — they’re legends crafted to make history. Keep reading to discover 10 world-record breakers from the world of spirits.

The world’s largest cocktail

The largest cocktail in the world was a whopping 39,746.82 litres, mixed by Nick Nicora in Sacramento, California, in July 2012. That comes in at approximately the same volume as 132,500 filled water balloons.

The gargantuan cocktail was made up of 2,650 bottles of Jose Cuervo Gold Tequila mixed with 31,797 litres of Margarita mix, 189 litres of lime juice, and 76 litres of Cointreau, plus ice and water. It beat the previous record held by Jimmy Buffet in Margaritaville, Las Vegas, by approximately 76 litres.

The resulting cocktail was able to serve roughly 134,000 people, and was presented at the California State Fair in souvenir cups.

The oldest spirits bottles in the world

In April this year, a complete bottle of Old Glenlivet 1843 was named the oldest whisky in the world. This whisky was distilled and bottled when The Glenlivet Distillery was still relatively new.

It is owned by Nguyen Dinh Tuan Viet, who lives in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and is known as the ‘King of World Spirits’. He holds more than 20 Guinness World Records for his collection of historic bottles, which includes some of the other oldest bottles of spirit in the world, such as Jules Robin 1696 – the oldest intact Cognac bottle in the world, aged 329 years; Armagnac 1830 – the oldest Armagnac bottle in the world, aged 195 years; and Rhum Ancienne Année 1772 – the oldest Rum bottle in the world, aged 253 years.

He also owns The Macallan 1926 60 Year Old, the world’s most expensive whisky.

The world’s largest Margarita

In July, Tijuana, Mexico, set a new Guinness World Record for the largest Margarita. The cocktail clocked in at a massive 34,419 litres – equivalent to approximately 229 standard-sized bathtubs.

While it is worth noting that the world’s largest cocktail (above) was also a Margarita, that record did not stipulate the style of cocktail – only that it was the largest – making way for this additional official record to be set.

The record-breaking event was part of Tijuana’s 136th-anniversary celebrations. It was achieved with the help of students from three Mexican universities, as well as suppliers who aided in the infrastructure for mixing the ingredients.

The world’s largest alcoholic mixed drink

The largest alcoholic mixed drink was 2,222.25 litres of gin and tonic – that’s 507 litres of gin and just more than 1,715 litres of tonic water. Mak Szczesniewicz of Poland set the record in February this year.

The mix was contained in a steel-reinforced plexiglass tank measuring 1.975m by 1.184m by 1.184m. It took two hours and 32 minutes to fill and reach the target quantity of 2,222 litres, which could fill an eight-person hot tub (plus a bit of overspill).

World’s most expensive cocktail

Salvatore Calabrese, better known as The Maestro, created the world’s most expensive cocktail in April this year, clocking in at €37,500 (US$41,160).

The serve was crafted in honour of crystal maker Baccarat’s 260th anniversary at fine dining restaurant and cocktail bar Nahaté in Dubai, UAE. It featured a special edition Patrón blend that combines three ‘exceptional’ aged Tequilas, alongside Kina Lillet from 1950, and Angostura Bitters from the 1930s. It was served in one of the rarest 1937 Baccarat crystal glasses ever crafted, of which only two remain in existence.

The whisky with the most flavour

Ascension Johnson Reserve

Whisky maker and maturation specialist Johnson Reserve was awarded the title of The Greatest Variety of Flavours in a Whisky by Guinness World Records in November 2024, after a single cask of aged single malt journeyed through a sequence of 33 unique casks, giving it a ‘nuanced complexity’.

The 33 casks used to create the Scotch whisky, called Ascension, were sourced from all corners of the globe, including Mexico, France, Japan, Australia, and California’s Napa Valley.

To certify the spirit’s achievement of boasting the greatest variety of flavours in a whisky, the brand sourced testimonials from experts within the industry and enlisted proven operators in the space to provide information to Guinness on the process the whisky had been through.

The world’s longest bar

Isn’t it annoying when you head to a bar and can’t find a seat? That isn’t a problem at Humble Baron, the bar within the Nearest Green Distillery in Shelbyville, Tennessee, which holds the Guinness World Record for the longest bar in the world, with capacity for 500, and enough seats for 198.

At 518 feet long, the 17-station bar, with space for 50 members of staff, snakes around the 20,000-square-foot room in twists and turns beneath the sound engineering rig above, and past the eye-catching stage at the back of the venue (both of which were built by the team that created Paisley Park for Prince), before swerving back around to complete a loop.

The world’s biggest bottle of Scotch

The world’s largest bottle of Scotch whisky, containing 311 litres of a 32-year-old Macallan single malt, sold for £1.1 million (US$1.3m) at auction in April 2022. IGuinness World Records officially certified it as the largest bottle in existence in September 2021.

After maturing in two sister casks at The Macallan’s Speyside warehouse for 32 years, the 43% ABV liquid was bottled by Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky.

The vessel measured five feet and 11 inches and contained the equivalent of 444 standard 700ml bottles. That’s equal to six full tanks of petrol, which should get you from New York to Los Angeles.

A 228-litre bottle of The Famous Grouse previously held the record in 2012.

The world’s biggest bottle of vodka

Last year, British spirits brand Au Vodka took the title of world’s biggest bottle of vodka.

Beating Polish brand Chopin’s previous record of a 200-litre bottle of vodka by 50 litres, the colossal golden bottle stands at 2.1 metres tall. It holds approximately 357 times more vodka than a standard bottle of Au. That’s enough to make roughly 4,166 Vodka Martinis – one every evening for more than 11 years.

The handmade glass bottle features a small tap fitted at the rear to dispense the vodka.

The bottle, which stood on display at Stansted Airport in London, was put up for auction with a starting bid of £150,000 (US$197,803).

The world’s largest rum Punch

Duppy Share

In August, The Duppy Share rum and Reggae Land, the UK’s biggest reggae festival, made history by breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest rum Punch ever made.

Duppy Share filled a giant 1,000-litre punch bowl with enough of the iconic Caribbean cocktail to serve more than 5,000 festival-goers. That’s roughly the same body volume as a fully grown cow.

It was made with 329 bottles of Duppy Share white rum, 750 litres of Tropical Vibes fruit punch, four litres of Seasn bitters, 800 squeezed limes, and 21 litres of sugar syrup.

Duppy Share founder George Frost said: “We’ve always believed rum Punch is the ultimate sharing serve – and what better way to bring people together than with the biggest bowl of rum Punch the world has ever seen? To break a world record in partnership with Reggae Land feels like a true celebration of the culture, spirit and joy of rum.”
