Perro Verde widens Californian footprint

Mezcal brand Perro Verde has embarked on a distribution partnership with Mexcor International Wine & Spirits to expand its reach in the state of California.

The ultra-premium mezcal brand boasts a portfolio of three expressions: Espadin, Espadin-Tobasiche Blend, and 100% Tobasiche – the rarest expression in the lineup – which is bottled in limited quantities.

Now, Houston-based Mexcor International will expand the brand’s reach in what is considered to be one of the most influential and competitive spirits markets in the US.

“California is the epicentre of our US strategy, and this new partnership allows us to scale faster and smarter,” said Juan Santiago Rodríguez, co-founder of Perro Verde Mezcal. “Mexcor’s network and expertise give Perro Verde the ability to secure placement with top retailers, restaurants, and bars across the state.”

Porfirio Chagoya, who represents the family in Oaxaca that brings 120 years of mezcal making tradition to the brand, added: “This partnership with Mexcor is a pivotal step in sharing our family’s heritage more widely in California. Together, we are ensuring that Perro Verde reaches more people while preserving the rare quality of our craft.”

Perro Verde is crafted using a proprietary method for heating lava rocks, which allows the brand to use 10 times less wood in the agave cooking process.

Heat dissipation gates safeguard against over- or under-cooking, while a cooler fermentation enhances aromas, flavours, and consistency. This method results in less overpowering smoke, enabling the brand to showcase the natural qualities of the terroir-driven wild agaves, of which it has full supply chain control over.

Crafted for sipping, its smoothness is said to appeal to mezcal lovers, Tequila drinkers, and even whisky aficionados.

Earlier this year, The Spirits Business spoke to the founders of Perro Verde about their ambitions for mezcal and getting an Oscar-winning actor on board with the brand.
