Heart Cut bottles taste of the Pacific Northwest

To mark its milestone 20th release, independent bottler The Heart Cut has collaborated with one of the leading names in the American single malt movement, Westland Distillery.

Based in Seattle, Washington, Westland Distillery has been instrumental in shaping the American single malt whiskey category, helping secure its official recognition in early 2025.

This single cask release is a first for Westland, being the only locally peated solo cask to be release by the brand outside its acclaimed Solum range.

“Being able to bottle a one-off single cask from Westland feels incredibly special,” said Georgie Bell, co-founder of The Heart Cut.

“They’re one of the early pioneers of the American single malt movement, and to work with them on something this distinctive – a whiskey malted with local Washington state peat – is a real honour. A true taste of the Pacific Northwest.”

Smoked using local Washington state peat, the whiskey carries an earthy, herbal depth with subtle coastal smoke, giving way to creamy sweetness and sun-warmed fruit, with notes of acacia honey and grilled peaches.

Matured in an ex-Bourbon cask, this single cask produced just 306 bottles.

Ana Hinz, business development manager of Westland Distillery, said: “Working with partners who understand and appreciate our approach to whiskey-making is incredibly important to us.

“It was clear from the outset that The Heart Cut is as passionate as we are about exploring flavourful whiskey with a sense of place. It’s always a joy to find the right cask for our partners, but this one was extra special because it showcases terroir in an exciting way.

“The barley was locally grown, and the peat was harvested just a few hours south-west of the distillery. Our local peat has a different makeup of flora than peat from Scotland, and that difference comes through both the nose and the palate of this whiskey. It’s unexpected, and delicious.”

The Heart Cut #20 Westland has an RRP £85 (US$112), and is bottled at 53% ABV.

It is available exclusively at theheartcut.com, with UK distribution only.

To celebrate its second birthday in September, The Heart Cut became the first to independently bottle and distribute whiskies from New Zealand outside of their home country.
