‘Haunting’ Scottish folklore inspires TWE bottling
By Georgie CollinsIn tribute to ‘the spookiest time of the year’, spirits retailer The Whisky Exchange (TWE) has bottled a six-year-old Ben Nevis single malt called Caoineag – The Weeping Spirit.

The Caoineag – The Weeping Spirit is described as a characterful six-year-old Ben Nevis single malt whisky, and will launch exclusively through The Whisky Exchange on Friday 31 October, otherwise known as Halloween.
This ‘haunting’ whisky was chosen by TWE buying director Dawn Davies MW and Chris Bolton, Own Label product manager, for its rich, peaty notes.
These notes are said to evoke the misty Scottish moorlands where the caoineag – a female spirit in Scottish folklore, also known as a Highland banshee or a ‘weeper’ – can be heard foretelling sorrow to come.
“We wanted something a little ‘dirty’, and I mean that in the best sense of the word and Ben Nevis is the perfect blend of wonderful fruit and a bit of earthy funk,” Davies told The Spirits Business. “It had to be a whisky that spoke to the story it was telling. We wanted to evoke a sense of drama.

“We tasted a few whiskies for the release, but this was the one that we really felt captured the essence of what the story was.”
Davies added: “We wanted to do something a little different with our own bottlings and there are so many amazing tales and legends that surround where whisky is made all over the world that we felt a spooky-inspired theme was perfect and worked well to launch on Halloween.
“We started not with the whisky but with the tale of the caoineag, we then requested a few different whiskies to see which one fit the story. We tasted the Ben Nevis and fell in love both with the liquid and how well it fit what we were trying to do. For us, whisky should tell a tale so that we draw people into the liquid. Our in-house design team came up with the label and we knew we were on to a winner.”
Caoineag – The Weeping Spirit is available exclusively from The Whisky Exchange online, or in its three stores located at London Bridge, Covent Garden and Great Portland Street.
It is bottled at 55% ABV and retails for £59.95 (US$79.25).
Last week TWE unveiled another product from its Own Label range, Good Old-Fashioned Christmas Whisky 2025.
