Glenmorangie release tells tales of spice markets

Scotch producer Glenmorangie has turned to the flavours of spice markets for the sixth limited edition expression in its annual ‘A Tale Of’ series.

This year’s edition, A Tale of Spices, offers Glenmorangie fans the opportunity to discover a sweet and spicy take on the distillery’s style, inspired by spice markets.

Previous expressions in the series include A Tale of Ice Cream in 2024, Tokyo in 2023, and The Forest in 2022.

A Tale of Spices is the latest expression by Glenmorangie’s whisky creation team, led by Dr Bill Lumsden MBE. It was initially aged in Bourbon barrels before being finished in four different cask varieties: French oak Moroccan red wine, new charred oak, STR (shaved, toasted, and recharred), and Pedro Ximénez Sherry – a first for the distillery.

Offered at 46% ABV, the limited edition features notes of cumin, saffron, nutmeg, ginger, and chilli, with floral hints of rose and jasmine, as well as sugar-coated almonds and eucalyptus.

Lumsden said: “I have always loved the variety of colours and aromas I’ve found in spice markets around the globe. Some years ago, master blender Gillian Macdonald and I experimented with Moroccan red wine casks for the first time and became captivated by the fragrant, spiced notes that they imparted to our whisky.

“From there, we created an unusual cask recipe of new charred oak, Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks, and shaved, toasted red wine casks to create a mosaic of flavours.

“Each sip of this limited edition is like immersing yourself in the sensory delights of a spice market – with new flavours and aromas at every turn. There are complex, earthy notes of ginger, nutmeg and cumin, with sweet floral hints and sugared almonds floating over the top. A sensory delight for single malt lovers to explore and enjoy,” Lumsden explained.

Glenmorangie A Tale of Spices is available from today (2 September) via the distillery’s website and visitor centre in Tain, Scotland, as well as at online retailers and specialist whisky shops. It has a recommended retail price of £76 (US$103).

Last month, Glenmorangie unveiled a new 25-year-old single malt called The Altus, praised by Indiana Jones actor Harrison Ford.
