1792 Bourbon adds first cask finish to core range
By Miona MadsenSazerac-owned Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown has introduced a Cognac cask-finished Bourbon to its permanent range.

The new expression is the first cask-finished Bourbon in the brand’s core portfolio.
Andrew Duncan, global brand director of 1792 Whiskey, said: “1792 Cognac Cask Finish represents a new flavour chapter in this brand’s story. We’re pleased to offer a whiskey that invites both new and experienced spirits fans to enjoy premium cask-finished Bourbon. It’s already becoming a favourite among Bourbon connoisseurs.”
1792 Cognac Cask Finish is a Kentucky straight Bourbon that uses the same mashbill, fermentation, and distillation process as the brand’s flagship small batch Bourbon. Initially aged in American white oak barrels, the new expression was finished in French Cognac casks for a minimum of six months.
The release comes a decade after the distillery’s first experimental cask-finished expression, 1792 Port Cask Finish, in 2015.
Bottled at 47.5% ABV, 1792 Cognac Cask Finish offers aromas of dark cocoa and rich caramel, with ripe plum, apricot, and cherry, Bananas Foster, creamy vanilla, and sweet oak on the palate.
Ross Cornelissen, master distiller of Barton 1792, explained: “We’ve experimented with a range of premium cask finishes, but Cognac immediately stood out for how naturally it complements our small batch Bourbon.
“Extended finishing in Cognac casks reveals dessert-like notes and layered complexity, while showcasing the full-bodied character of the small batch Bourbon and its signature high-rye recipe.”
The Cognac cask-finished Bourbon is now available through Sazerac’s distributors nationwide in the US, with a suggested retail price of US$37.99.
At The American Whiskey Masters 2025, Barton 1792 took home three Master, two Gold, and a Silver medal.
