The Scotch Whisky Masters 2025 results
While the industry has been buffeted by economic storms, the quality of the liquid the Scotch sector produces is not in doubt, as our annual blind-tasting competition proves.

Highs and lows in equal measure have been part of Scotch whisky’s story during this past year. From mixed export results to “historic” trade deals, there has been much to report on.
Statistics from the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) showed the value of Scotch exports fell by 3.7% to £5.4 billion (US$6.7bn) in 2024 compared with the previous year. However, exports by volume were up by 3.9%, indicating a trade down in the category, which the SWA attributed to a “challenging trading environment”.
More recently, a UK-India trade deal was welcomed by the sector, as it will initially halve the 150% import tariff Scotch whisky has faced in India for years. In the next decade, this is due to eventually fall to 40%, unlocking further potential for the category in the world’s biggest Scotch market by volume.
Scotch is globally renowned for its quality liquid – but which products are standing out in a crowded space? The annual Scotch Whisky Masters tasting aimed to assess the plethora of expressions on the market.
Six sets of judges gathered at Boisdale in Canary Wharf, London, to put the entries through their paces. Karen Taylor, director of Whisky For Everyone, chaired a panel with freelance drinks writer Caroline Roddis. A second team comprised Richard Legg, founder of Distilled Knowledge, and Antony Moss, independent sustainability consultant, who chaired.
Bryan Rodriguez-Curtis, spirits buyer at Bottle Apostle, chaired a third group. He was joined by spirits writer Ian Wisniewski, and Dan Greifer, bar supervisor at London’s Black Parrot.
Ruchira Neotia, drinks consultant and founder of Ruchira’s Table, also acted as a panel chair for the tasting. Her group consisted of Vicky Ilankovan, executive director of non-profit Equal Measures, and Emily Webster, senior PR and marketing manager at The Whisky Exchange.
David T Smith, spirits writer, consultant, and co-founder of the Craft Distilling Expo, was also a chair on the day. He was joined by Rosie Milsom, spirits judge, and Miona Madsen, content writer for The Spirits Business and the drinks business. The final team was formed of Malika Kirchel-Sharper, bar manager at Boisdale Canary Wharf, and Nicola Carruthers, deputy editor of The Spirits Business, who chaired.
The opening Blended – No Age Statement heat showed age is just a number, with nine Gold medals awarded.
Chivas Brothers performed particularly well, collecting five of the Golds – including a medal for Chivas Regal Extra Rum Cask Selection. The blend was enjoyed for its notes of “orange marmalade and nut brittle, with interesting depth of flavour”. Four Silver medals completed the flight.
In the Blended – Aged up to 12 Years heat, Sazerac’s “well-balanced, rounded” Imperial Blended Scotch 12 Years Old secured a Gold medal.
The judges then looked at blended whiskies aged between 13 and 18 years, and a Gold medal was awarded to White Heather 15 Years Old. The whisky had a “lively palate with a moreish combination of fruit, grain and white chocolate flavours, supported by a backbone of woody vanilla”.
The panels didn’t have to wait long to discover the day’s first Master, which appeared in the Blended – Aged Between 19 and 30 years heat. The Master medal went to Royal Cabinet 20 Years. Carruthers said: “Rich and robust, well-balanced with lingering sweetness. An excellent blend.”
Smooth finish
From there, the judges started to assess the blends by price point, beginning with standard-priced entrants, costing up to £20 (US$27). Five Gold medals and six Silvers were given in this flight. The Gold winners were: “chocolatey, solid” Highland Black Whisky; “slightly spicy with a smooth finish” Highland Warriors Blended Scotch Whisky; King Charles Blended Scotch Whisky, with “clotted cream and light smoke”; “light and approachable” John Samson Scotch Whisky; and “well-balanced with lots of sweet Sherry notes” Scottish Leader Sherry Cask Finish.
In the premium heat (£21-£30), “lightly creamy” Islay Mist Original Blended Scotch Whisky secured a Silver medal.
Two more Silvers were awarded in the next flight, Super-Premium (£31-£50), alongside four Golds. Timorous Beastie Highland Blended Malt was one of the Gold recipients, impressing with “some creamy, butterscotch notes, pear drops and citrus freshness”. GreatDrams Founders’ Choice also secured a Gold medal. The whisky had a “lovely soft mouthfeel with fruit and indulgent toffee”.
Chivas Brothers added to its medal count with Golds for Chivas Regal XV and Ballantine’s American Barrel 7 Years Old. The latter impressed with “hints of fruit and caramel, and nuttiness on the palate”.

The ultra-premium price point is where more Master blends were discovered – three, to be exact. The trio of top awards went to Chivas Brothers whiskies: Ballantine’s 30 Years Old, Royal Salute 30 Years Old Key to the Kingdom, and Chivas Regal Ultis XX Aged 20 Years. Of the Royal Salute expression, one judge noted: “Lovely salted caramel and toffee notes on the nose. The palate is rich, with a great depth of flavour, with loads more rich toffee, and a finish with a little warmth and dryness that lingers pleasantly.”
Seven Gold medals and two Silvers rounded off the flight, with Gold winners including Chivas Regal 18 Years Old Mizunara Fully Finished, and Ballantine’s 17 Years Old.
Roddis said: “There is so much potential in the blended category; these whiskies can be complex and enjoyable. These have shown us the great things blended whiskies can offer.”
Progressing to no-age-statement blended malts, and two Gold medals were awarded, one to D’Yavol Inception, with “coconut and toffee” flavours, and the second for “smooth and nicely balanced” Black Hound Blended Malt. Two Silver awards were given out in the Blended Malt – Aged up to 12 Years round, including one for MacNair’s Lum Reek 12 Years Old.
Another Silver was enjoyed in the Aged between 13 and 18 Years blended malt flight: Seventeen Black Whisky. Among the super-premium blended malts (£31-£50), another Silver was found alongside a Gold medallist: Elements of Islay Cask Edit. Tasting notes included “soft smoke and bacon” on the nose, with “fruit and grain notes joining the party” when sipped.
Another Gold was awarded to its stablemate, Elements of Islay Bourbon Cask, in the ultra-premium heat (£51-plus), while a Master medal went to Elements of Islay Sherry Cask. This whisky was praised for being a “classic Islay-style whisky”, and for delivering “red fruits, hints of apple and good levels of smoke”.
Elements of Islay collected three more medals in the Special Edition segment – two Masters and one Gold. The top awards were given to Elements of Islay Fireside and Elements of Islay Campfire. The latter was described as “super-smoky and charred” on the nose, while the palate brought “smoke, char, and some sweetness for balance, while the finish is nicely warming”.
Smith noted about the special edition whiskies in particular: “A superb flight, and a great illustration as to why many people think this is the sweet spot for value and quality in Scotch whisky.”
The judges went on to sample a new style, this time to Single Grain – No Age Statement. A Silver medal was awarded to Ballantine’s Single Distillery.
The Single Grain – Single Cask section produced a Gold medal in the form of Cask Masters North British. The judges picked up notes of “dried apple slices, toasted grains and a nutty hint”.
In the blended grain contingent, with standard-priced whiskies (up to £20), two Golds and two Silvers were awarded to La Martiniquaise-Bardinet whiskies – with the Golds given to “pleasant, easy-to-drink” Sir Edward’s 12 Years Old, and “fresh and fruity” Sir Edward’s Finest Blended Scotch Whisky.
Then it was time to delve into whiskies based on their geographic location. This part of the tasting has become increasingly interesting in recent years, as producers have, at times, moved away from their stereotypical flavour expectations, and embraced more creative freedom.
The first to be put to the taste test was Single Malt: Speyside – No Age Statement. A set of five Gold medals and three Silvers were found. All the Golds went to whiskies from Angus Dundee Distillers, including a medal for Tomintoul Amarone Cask Finish. The judges described the texture as “beautifully smooth”, and enjoyed flavours of “light malt, apple, red fruit and a touch of spice towards the end”.
The standard grew as the style moved on to single malts from Speyside aged up to 12 years. Two Master medals made their mark: 72.124 – Soak up the Sun with a Glass of Sherry, from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS), and Meikle Tòir The Sherry One from The GlenAllachie Distillers Company.

The former allowed “PX Sherry characteristics to shine through”, resulting in a “very drinkable dram, despite the high ABV” of 58.2% ABV. Meanwhile, Meikle Tòir The Sherry One was “nutty and sweet with dried fruit and spice, and great balance”. Eight Gold medals boosted the flight, and two Silvers.
More Masters made their presence known in the Single Malt: Speyside – Aged Between 13 and 18 Years group. One Master was given to Old Ballantruan 15 Years Old, thanks to its “sweet, barbecue, smoked paprika” aroma, which gave way to “sweet and ashy smoke, and mixed nuts in the pub” on the palate.
Also securing a Master was The Singleton Glen Ord Warm Reunion 16 Years Old, described as having a “rich and fruity aroma: raisins, caramelised apple, buttery pastry, and a delicate floral hint”. The palate was “fruity and round, with a dryness towards the finish – moreish”. The remainder of the flight presented six Golds and two Silvers.
Taylor noted: “Many of these were classic examples of what the region can offer.”
“A good level of complexity on the nose” combined with an “elegantly rich” palate resulted in a Gold medal for One Cask at a Time – Aultmore 33 in the Single Malt: Speyside – Aged Over 31 Years flight.
In the standard-priced category for Speyside single malts (up to £25), Glen Marnoch Speyside Single Malt collected a Gold medal. The judges said this would be good for cocktails. A Silver medal was also awarded in this round.
Two more Silvers and one Gold came next in the premium bracket (£26-£50). Speyside whisky Aberlour 12 Years Old Double Cask Matured received the Gold medal for “gorgeous vanilla and chocolate aromas” and “dried fruit” on the palate.
Stunning example
A lengthier flight of Single Malt: Speyside – Super-Premium (£51-£99) delivered a duo of Masters. The Glenlivet 15 Years Old French Oak was found to be “bright, grassy with some light vanilla and saline”. On the palate, the judges liked how the whisky “grows in intensity – a stunning example of what Speyside can deliver”.
Of fellow Master winner Buchanan’s Special Reserve 18 Years Old, Neotia quipped: “It’s giving Speyside. Very pretty – honeysuckle, acacia honey, heather, a bit of grass and wheat bran. This would hold itself in whisky cocktails and stand up to dilution.” With eight Golds and one Silver, this was a memorable flight for the judges.
The positive results continued to roll in. In the Single Malt: Speyside – Ultra-Premium (£100+) round, five entries were deemed worthy of the Master accolade – and all of them were created by Chivas Brothers.
Master-winning Aberlour 16 Years Old Double Cask Matured was liked for its “orange sponge cake and honeysuckle” aromas, and “baked peach, vanilla cream and ginger cookies” on the palate. Stablemate and fellow Master Aberlour 18 Years Old Double Sherry Cask Finish was described as “rich and creamy – a decadent dram”.
The remaining trio of Masters were awarded to “fruity, spicy and delightfully balanced” The Glenlivet 21 Years Old Sample Room Collection, “floral, sweet and robust” Longmorn 18 Years Old, and “superb, nutty, fruity” Longmorn 22 Years Old. Five Gold medals and one Silver were also awarded in this round.
Madsen said: “These showcased the variety of Speyside whisky character with style.”
Smith added: “It’s exciting to try whiskies at this level that have the freedom to indulge in some of the best spirits available.”

Rich profiles exceed expectations
WhiskyHeroes ‘The Might of the Moor’ Auchroisk also exceeded expectations in the Single Malt: Speyside – Single Cask flight, adding to the Master medals. Moss enjoyed the whisky’s “rich profile with complex roasted nuts, and rich sweetness”.
The final batch of Speyside whiskies showcased a couple of cask strength options, resulting in one Gold and one Silver medal.
The Highlands and Islands were scrutinised next, and whiskies aged up to 12 years were found to be worthy of four Gold medals and one Silver. Among the Gold winners were two Aldi bottlings, including “elegant and composed” Glen Marnoch Single Malt Bourbon Cask Finish.
A little extra maturation played in the category’s favour, as two Master medals were found in the 13- to 18-year-old contingent. Port Askaig 15 Years Old delighted with its “smoky bacon aromas”, which developed on the palate into “dark rye bread, wisps of smoke, with some counter-sweetness”. The Glenturret 15 Years Old took a Master for its “excellent balance of sweet vanilla, raisins, gentle spice and candied ginger”. Three Golds wrapped up the flight.
The older whiskies, those aged between 19 and 30 years, added another Master medal to the growing tally. Master-winning One Cask at a Time – Highland Park 27 was “elegant, with notes of soft grain, iced sponge, lemonade and honeysuckle”. Two Golds and one Silver closed the flight.
Looking at price brackets, and among Highland and Island single malts in the Standard range (up to £25), two Gold medals and two Silvers were uncovered.
The Premium price point produced a trio of Silvers, two Golds and one Master, the latter awarded to Arran Single Malt Sherry Cask ‘The Bodega’. “Rich dried fruit with plenty of spice; vanilla custard and nutty notes on the finish,” noted Legg.
One Silver and five Gold medals made up the super-premium segment of Highland and Island single malts. Winners included “sweet and approachable” Tullibardine 15 Years Old.
In the ultra-premium (£100+) heat, Chivas Brothers won one Gold medal and one Master, which went to Scapa 21 Years Old. “Very nutty on the nose, some cherry and then some salinity and smoke,” Smith found.
A similar pattern appeared in the following Single Malt: Highlands & Islands – Single Cask round, with one Gold medal and one Master, which went to WhiskyHeroes ‘The Mask of El Peaton’. The judges commended the brand’s “well-integrated” use of peat and an ex-Tequila cask, with the agave influence adding a “nice vibrancy to the liquid”.
Cask Masters Caol Ila lived up to its name in the Special Edition flight, securing a Master medal. “Gentle smoke on the nose with some wood and caramel. The palate is punchy – a billowing bonfire and a rich sweetness that’s well balanced,” the judges noted.
The Highlands and Islands rounds ended with some no-age-statement whiskies. A Master was awarded to Kilchoman Batch Strength. The judges liked its “peaty, sea salt, briny” character, which was mirrored on both the nose and palate. Lagg Single Malt Kilmory Edition also scooped a coveted Master. “Salted caramel, bacon fat, medicinal – delicious,” the judges enthused. Seven Gold medals and two Silvers were also sampled.
Campbeltown sees success
A selection of Campbeltown whiskies showed that this small region has the might to contend with its bigger counterparts. In the premium segment (£26-£50), Glen Scotia Double Cask Rum Finish won Gold for its “floral notes and subtle candied fruits, and tropical fruit flavours”.
In the Special Edition section, Glen Scotia Campbeltown Malts Festival Release 2025 took home Gold for flavours of “sweet sticky ribs and Texan barbecue”, while Glen Scotia Victoriana received Gold in the no-age-statement heat for being “very well balanced with lots of Sherried sweetness”.
Glen Scotia 15 Years Old rounded off Campbeltown in the 13-18 years bracket. The Gold-worthy whisky was found to have a “delicate perfume nose with a nice whisper of smoke that lingers on the finish”.

The tasting then travelled to the Islay region, beginning with single malt whiskies up to 12 years old. 53.491 – Gastronomic Beachcombing from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society took home the top Master accolade for its “good oily notes, fruity, rich, smoked, iodine – dense and well put together”.
Two Bruichladdich whiskies found success with Gold medals in the 13- to 18-year-old flight, while one received a Master: Port Charlotte 18 Years Old 2025 Edition. Taylor found this to be “salty, sweet, smoky, with fruits, caramel, malt and toffee apple”.
In the 19-30-year-old single malt heat, The Bruichladdich Twenty One was awarded Gold.
Quality and value for money impressed in the following Single Malt: Islay – Standard (up to £25) round, where Stairsneach Islay Single Malt received a Master medal. “Crunchy sugar, smoke, citrus, seashell and ash notes – a cracking dram for the price,” said the judges.
A trio of Gold medals were praised in the Premium (£26-£50) heat, including an award for Berry Bros & Rudd Classic Islay Traditional Cask. Port Askaig Cask Strength 02-2004 received a respectable Silver in the Single Malt: Islay – Cask Strength round.
Another WhiskyHeroes bottling made a positive impression in the single cask heat: ‘The Unpronounceable’ Staoisha. Tasting notes included “moreish and beautifully balanced – heather, seaweed, blossom honey and fresh lemon peel marmalade”. A Gold medal completed the flight.
An impressive Lowlands Super-Premium flight followed, with Masters across the board. Two of the top medals were awarded to whiskies from Eden Mill St Andrews, while the other two went to InchDairnie Whisky.
Eden Mill St Andrews Sherry Cask was one of the Master winners. It had notes of “Riesling, Amontillado Sherry, and an oily, rich texture”. Rodriguez-Curtis commented: “It is absolutely fabulous: juicy, aromatic, just a sheer pleasure to enjoy.”
From InchDairnie’s Master winners, KinGlassie Fife Single Malt Raw Aged 8 Years impressed with “peat, akin to camping embers, a little meaty, with orchard fruits and hints of wood smoke. A perfect example of exemplary peated Scotch.”
Wisniewski noted: “An outstanding flight. Each whisky shone, and showcased the less-seen and enjoyed Lowlands style.”
Rodriguez-Curtis added: “The cask usage was perfect, and the peat levels spot on for the intensity of the distillate and the style required. This was an enjoyable flight that deserves the scores it received.”
Art of St Andrews 2024 also added to the Gold medal haul in the Single Malt: Lowlands – Ultra-Premium (£100+) flight. Meanwhile, Diageo’s Old Parr 12 Years Old received a Silver in the Aged up to 12 Years round.
“Lovely, balanced” Old Parr 18 Years Old showed what a little extra maturation can do, creating a Gold medallist in the Single Malt: Lowlands – Aged Between 13 and 18 Years.
The final Master of the day was found in the Rye round, and was given to RyeLaw Scottish Rye Whisky Vintage 2018. “Squishy bananas, fennel, iced biscuits and malt loaf” were just some of the flavours that were enjoyed.
Finally, completing the contest was a flight of Whisky Spirit Drinks, resulting in a pair of commendable Silver medals for Chivas Brothers, awarded to Chivas Regal Takumi Reserve and Ballantine’s Sweet Blend.
In a huge Scotch tasting, the judges paused to regroup, before revisiting the day’s Master winners. While many whiskies were enjoyed, only one could be voted this year’s Scotch Whisky Taste Master – and that product was Scapa 21 Years Old.
While Scotch whisky might be navigating a rocky period of ups and downs, there is no denying the quality abounding from the category. And though the next year, or two, might bring a few blips for the sector, the standard of liquid hailing from across the country means Scotch remains in good stead to soar in the future.
