New Grove Distillery gears up to open visitor centre

The new still was inaugurated on 6 August during an exclusive press visit to the distillery and La Maison de Mauricia, an Agriterra sugar mill.
New Grove Distillery produces several rum brands, including New Grove, Lazy Dodo, and Gecko Bay. The distillery operates three ageing cellars and utilises three different types of distillation equipment, featuring its latest addition: the double-retort pot still.
The installation of the new still is considered a significant technological advancement, according to Florence Harel de Coriolis, head of marketing at New Grove Distillery. This innovation allows for a greater concentration of aromas, the production of more complex rums rich in esters, and improved energy efficiency.
Harel de Coriolis said: “Moving from a cane mill in 1838 to a modern pot still in 2025 symbolises a time loop – a return to the source, enriched by two centuries of expertise. New Grove Distillery is an example of how tradition and modernity can coexist.”
In November 2025, the distillery will open its new visitor centre at L’Aventure du Sucre in Pamplemousses, Mauritius, aiming to strengthen the connection between rum, local history, and cultural tourism.
Harel de Coriolis added: “The global demand for premium and artisanal rums is booming, and Mauritius is gradually establishing itself as a reference for quality rum production.
“Rum tourism is a strategic growth area, attracting visitors eager to discover the secrets of Mauritian rum-making and to take part in tastings. This dynamism benefits the local economy and strengthens Mauritius’s image as a premium destination for spirits enthusiasts.”
Sustainability is central to the distillery’s operations. With 6,000 hectares under cultivation and a processing capacity of 336 tonnes per hour, the Terra group implements circular economy principles, utilises green energy, reduces agricultural inputs, and ensures complete traceability.
The island’s manufacturers’ association, Made in Moris, actively supports this sustainable approach, promoting both innovation and Mauritian heritage in local and international markets.

New rum range
In anticipation of the opening, New Grove has launched a new rum range called Mauricia Pure Cane Rum, which is said to represent more than two centuries of expertise.
The brand’s range includes four expressions: Creation white rum; Signature, aged for 18 months; Heritage, a blend of three to five year old rums; and L’Intendance, a complex vegetal rum.
Speaking at the event on 6 August, Yannick Noel, business unit manager of rum and export at Grays Inc, described the essence of Mauricia rum’s distinct identity: “Mauricia stands out for its unique aromatic signature. Mauritius, with its subtropical climate, volcanic soils, and microclimates, offers exceptional conditions for growing sugarcane. These natural conditions give Mauricia rums a rich aromatic palette, slightly mentholated and peppery, with natural spicy notes.”
Noel continued: “The role of the master distiller and cellar master embodies the alliance between cultural heritage, expertise passed down through generations, and constant innovation. Every decision, from the choice of cask to the ageing period, reflects patient mastery of both time and materials.”
