Amrut Expedition is India’s oldest single malt
By Miona MadsenAmrut Distilleries has launched the oldest bottling of an Indian single malt whisky to date: 15-year-old Amrut Expedition, priced at US$12,500.

The rare 15-year-old single malt, released as a tribute to Amrut Distillers’ diamond jubilee, marks a milestone for Indian whisky as the oldest expression ever bottled in the country.
Rakshit N Jagdale, managing director of Amrut Distilleries, said: “Amrut Expedition is more than just a whisky – it is a celebration of our 75-year journey, a testament to our relentless pursuit of excellence started by grandfather, JN Radhakrishna Rao Jagdale. Aged for 15 years across two exceptional casks, every drop tells a story of heritage and craftsmanship.
“With only 75 bottles available worldwide, it is a true collector’s piece crafted to near perfection. This launch is also a tribute to my father, the late Neelkanth Rao Jagdale, whose vision and pioneering spirit put India on the global whisky map.
“Seeing Amrut reach this milestone is an emotional and proud moment for us. Expedition is not just a whisky – it is history in a bottle.”
In the British Isles, it is common for whiskies to have an age statement of 15 years. However, in India, the warm climate and high evaporation rates make it challenging to achieve the age statement.
Amrut Expedition is crafted from six-row Indian barley and aged for eight years in a Pedro Ximénez Sherry butt, followed by an additional seven years in an ex-Bourbon barrel. Offered in 700ml bottles, the whisky was bottled in September 2024 at 62.8% ABV.
The 15-year-old single malt displays aromas of Sherried truffle, cane molasses, sherbet, vanilla pod and sandalwood, followed on the palate by notes of chocolate-coated Sherry, cracked black pepper, bitter cola and cocoa, vanilla and dried fruits.

With a suggested retail price exceeding US$12,500, Amrut Expedition will be available in the brand’s key markets across India, the US, the UK, Europe, Dubai, Singapore and Australia.
Travel case
Limited to just 75 bottles, the single malt is presented in a travel-inspired case that is said to ‘exude the grandeur of a royal heirloom’. Designed to reflect the rarity of the whisky inside, the packaging incorporates intricate metal and wood elements.
The case took six months of innovation and five prototypes to perfect. Each box is handcrafted and painted, containing individually engraved and numbered bottles.
The bottle itself showcases a diamond-cut design, embellished with detailed gold engravings that create a unique pattern. Each bottle also comes with a regal silver peg measure, handmade by a silversmith in Bangalore, and two crystal tasting glasses.
Each bottle features an embedded NFC tag and includes a custom authentication card that tells the story behind the historic release.
Amrut Expedition follows the release of Amrut Greedy Angels Chairman’s Reserve 10-year-old single malts in 2014, 2015, and 2019, and 12-year-old single malts launched in 2016 and 2021.
In March 2025, Amrut Distillers became one of the founding members of the Indian Malt Whisky Association (IMWA).
