The Gin Masters 2025 – First Tasting results

Forget the naysayers – gin is far from over, and as the first part of The Gin Masters proves, there is plenty to be excited about.

The second part of The Gin Masters will take place later this year

The industry needn’t panic about the state of the gin category just yet. For all murmurings of gin’s demise, the sales data still paints a positive picture for the category. In 2024, global gin volumes grew by 2% and reached approximately 107 million nine-lite-cases, according to data from IWSR Drinks Market Analysis. The stats show gin consumption last year was 25% ahead of 2019 levels, despite declines in the UK and US. (It’s also worth noting said declines were offset an uptick in interest in India and Italy.)

There is evidently life in the gin category yet – and there were hundreds of bottlings entered into The Gin Masters 2025 – First Tasting. Round one of two (given the volume of entries) was judged at private members’ club Home House in London.

Multiple panels of judges were required for this tasting, with one team comprising Emma Stokes, AKA Gin Monkey, Elise Craft, co-host of Whisky Squad, and Matt Chambers, co-founder of Whisky For Everyone, who chaired the group.

A second team included Dan Greifer, bar manager of Black Parrot in London, Graham McActeer, spirits partnership lead at Craft Gin Club, and Ruchia Neotia, drinks consultant, and founder of Ruchira’s Table, who chaired.

Rosie Milsom, a freelance new-product-development consultant, and Steph DiCamillo, director of Wine & Such, sat on a third panel, which was chaired by David T Smith, drinks writer, consultant and co-founder of the Craft Distilling Expo.

A fourth panel comprised Karen Taylor, co-founder of Whisky For Everyone, Richard Legg, founder of Distilled Knowledge, and Nicola Carruthers, deputy editor of The Spirits Business, who led the group.

Sarah Miller, founder of the Gin A Ding Ding blog, was also a chair. She was joined on her panel by Sara Jane Eichler, founder of Negroni Club, Allison Strydom, of Gin Squares, and Simon Sharp, captain of Nautilus Gin Experiences.

On the sixth and final panel were Cosmo Boardman, creative director at Moore House Cocktail Co, Emilia Wrelton, bar manager for At Sloane hotel, and Melita Kiely, editor-in-chief of The Spirits Business, and chair of The Global Spirits Masters Competitions.

Affordable options

Starting with the most affordable entries, the judges looked to see where value for money could be found in the Standard-priced gins (up to £15). There are several quality expressions in this price range – and four of the entries received Gold medals, while three took home Silvers. Gold winners included: “gentle, floral” Royal Flush Luxe Noir Gin; “soft, citrus” Royal Flush Gin; “punchy” Royal Flush Luxe Amer Gin, and Free Love Dry Gin, which featured “light oily juniper with a little citrus and some complexity”.

As the price increased to Premium (£16-£20), three more Golds came to light, accompanied by five Silver medals. Aldi UK cleaned up with the Gold medals, which were awarded to: “robust and juniper-forward” Comhla Scottish Gin; Haysmith’s Raspberry & Redcurrant Pink Gin with a “fair amount of complexity and fruitiness”; and “spicy, peppery and herbaceous Hayman’s London Dry Gin.

Gin’s versatility and flavour diversity was appararent

A Silver was also awarded to Tanqueray Bossa Nova in the Flavoured Gin-Based spirit Drink – Premium (also priced between £16-£20). The 30% ABV spirit was liked for its “guava-forward” profile.

In the following Super-Premium (£21-£35) heat, the standard really stepped up. A quartet of Master medallists were celebrated in what was an enormous flight. Diageo’s Tanqueray No. Ten collected one of the Master medals. “This was made for Martinis,” enthused Neotia. “Excellent texture, with mellow yellow apple and mint on the finish, with some earthy liquorice root.” Master-winning Von Berg Distilled Gin won for its “robust and smooth” profile, with “bold juniper and pine notes on the nose and palate”. For D1 London Gin, the judges loved how “exquisitely balanced” this Master winner was, describing it as a “juniper-forward, black pepper, spiced gin”.

Eden Mill St Andrews received the fourth Master in this flight for its Golf Gin. Tasting notes included “citrus blossom, a little vanilla, sage – good texture and a clean finish”.

Fifteen Gold medals were also awarded in this heat. Gold recipients included Malfy Originale, Ukiyo Tokyo Dry Gin, Y-Gin, and Jaisalmer Indian Craft Gin. Eleven Silver medals completed the flight.

“It was nice to see some of the ABVs increase as a result of the higher price point,” noted Taylor. “It gives more volume, more texture and character to the gins overall.”

In the top price tier – Ultra-Premium (£36+) – seven more Masters joined the fold. Proving celebrity spirits can have substance was Still G.I.N. by Dre and Snoop, which took home the coveted Master medal. DiCamillo said: “The nose is lovely; it has intense aniseed right up front followed by mint. The palate has lots of fresh lemon, a bit of aniseed, orange peel, really good length, with a core of juniper – I really like this.”

Archie Rose Bone Dry Gin also secured a Master medal for being “bold and expressive, with a nice level of juniper on the palate”.

Home House Gin also took home a Master award, after impressing with “bursts of saffron, balanced well with juniper to create a fresh and vibrant gin”.

Heaven & Hell Dubai Oud Gin also gained a Master medal, described as “elegant and fragrant, with sweet honeyed notes”. Also sitting in the Master league was Hernö Botanical Flavoured Gin: “Herbaceous and sweet all at the same time,” noted Greifer. “Loads of juniper; so much spice and floral notes.”

The sixth Master winner in this round was Sasshu Gin, which displayed “yummy cacao, sweet potato, juniper – just beautifully crafted”. Completing the Master haul in this flight was Etsu The Original. Tasting notes included “a nice mix of citrus and seaside salt air”, with overall “good alcohol integration”.

This was a strong flight for Golds, too, with 16 awarded in total. Gold winners included Ki No Tea, Shortcross Gin, Cotswold Dry Gin, and Smeaton’s Bristol Method Dry Gin. Six Silvers wrapped up the flight. “The Ultra-Premium category showed some great examples of what you can get at the mid/high-end of the market,” noted Milsom.

McActeer added: “The variety on display was very interesting. The ultra-premium prices are justified as the distillers are really pushing the boundaries with the botanicals.”

London Dry continues to lead

Gin-Masters-2025
Fizzing up: London Dry was a strong heat

Another substantial flight followed: London Dry. This round presented four Master medallists, which were: Gibson’s London Dry, which “delivered everything you want from a London Dry”; Colombo No.9 with Earl Grey London Dry Gin, which had “soft notes of bergamot and lots of Earl Grey”; “bold, piney, resinous and complex” Citadelle Original; and “slightly grassy with lime zest, juniper and sweet pine” Poltergeist Unfiltered Gin.

The London Dry entrants also produced 19 Gold medallists. Four products by Beefeater Gin were among the Gold winners, including Beefeater 24, with “classic lemon, juniper and a touch of coriander”. A “herbaceous” palate also secured Edinburgh Gin The Original a Gold award. Ten Silver medals closed the flight. “This was a pretty solid round,” said Legg. “It’s a category where people expect the gin to taste a certain way, and it’s quite difficult for gins labelled as ‘London Dry’ to taste quite different. It needs to be a well-made product.” As the number of medals proved, there are many to be found in this part of the category.

Contemporary has been a rapidly growing subcategory in recent years – and the medals demonstrate why. This is where producers can be creative, while ensuring the juniper character remains intact. Leading the way were six Master-worthy products. First, Poltergeist Citrus took home the top award with its “big, bold, inviting nose, with lots of zesty citrus on the palate”. Lark Distilling Co secured two Masters in this flight, one for Forty Spotted Citrus & Pepperberry, and one for Forty Spotted Classic. The Citrus & Pepperberry variant was described as “very zesty, punchy and spicy”, while the Classic was said to be “oily, with jammy berries, a peppery note and a mouthwatering character”.

Alvearium Gin gained a Master medal for its “floral aroma and honeyed sweetness, with coriander and juniper on the finish”. Master-winning Árpád Paprika – Sweet Pepper Gin was enjoyed for being “very peppery, with intense smoke and bell peppers”. And completing the Master streak was London Mat Dry Gin, praised for hints of “bold and unmistakable sweet black tea” on the nose and the palate.

Strong Contemporary offerings

Among the 13 Golds also awarded in the Contemporary round were four from Astaea Spirits, including Astraea Meadow. The gin was found to be “sweet, floral with some spice and a long finish”. The subcategory finished with nine Silver medals.

Reflecting on the category, Stokes said: “Innovation remains at the forefront of the gin industry, which is especially evident here. It gives producers the freedom to experiment. It was good to see juniper well-represented, as it often takes a supporting role in the contemporary category.”

Chambers was also impressed by the round. He said: “This was a very expressive and exciting category that continues to surprise with plenty of big flavours.” After contemporary, higher-strength gins were put through their paces in the Navy Strength flight. Two more Master medallists were discovered: Cannonball by Edinburgh Gin, and Naught Overproof Gin.

Cannonball was “surprisingly bright for the high ABV”, and offered a “touch of spice, juniper, nice intensity and citrus”. Naught Overproof, meanwhile, showcased “good spice, texture, and a resinous quality with good juniper levels”. Two Golds and two Silvers completed this round. “This is a category that rarely disappoints,” said Smith, clearly impressed.

The judges all agreed how far the Cask-Aged subcategory has come along in recent years – which could also be seen in the scores. For a smaller-sized flight, the round delivered four Masters, a Gold, and a Silver medal. Renais Grand Cru Cask-Aged Gin was one of the top Master winners, impressing with “grape notes on the nose, buckets of orange and orange blossom, alongside a subtle warming spice. There’s a solid juniper backbone running throughout – very nice.”

Poltergeist Barrel Aged also received a Master medal for its “Cognac-scented beginnings, followed by orange oil and a distinct woodiness”. Tumbleroot Brewery & Distillery’s Navy Strength Gin, which is aged, also secured a Master. “Extraordinary!” exclaimed Neotia. “Vanilla and oloroso Sherry character, salty, toffee apples, candied walnuts – the alcohol integration deserves a pat on the back.”

Shortcross Cask Aged Gin was the fourth expression to receive a Master in this flight thanks to its “huge juniper hit and lovely citrussy lightness”.

A Gold medal was awarded to Cygnet 77, and a Silver went to Hernö Juniper Cask Gin.

Gin-Masters
Which gin would you choose for your Martini?

“Cask-Aged is experimental, and should be encouraged,” expressed Craft. “Producers have to be confident to get a good product.”

A short but sweet flight of Old Tom resulted in two Masters for “soft, delicately spiced, slightly sweet with a wonderful texture” Edinburgh Old Tom Gin, and “nicely balanced, with some gentle spice, honey and floral notes”.

Two Masters and a Gold were also enjoyed in the Organic round. Hernö Dry Gin took home a Master for being “juniper-forward, herbaceous and vibrant”. Truce of Gin also walked away with a Master for “spicy juniper and a big kick of cardamom”. A Gold was also awarde to Gin L’Acrobate.

In the Microdistillery heat, Västerås Distilled Gin won a respectable Silver.

Looking to Genever, and one of each medal was awarded in the flight. The top Master award went to Bols Genever Barrel Aged, which left an impression with its “big, malty aroma” and “a “kiss of barrel complexity”.

A trio of Gold medals and a Silver were granted in the Pink Gin contingent. The Golds went to “Hubba Bubba” Beefeater Pink; “rosé-influenced” S de Sorgin; and Malfy Rosa, which was “pink grapefruit through and through”.

In the Flavoured Gin flight, a substantial number of Gold-worthy winners were enjoyed. Among the 10 Golds, winners included: Saaremaa Cur Gin with “sweet rhubarb on the palate”; Citadelle Vive le Cornichon with “lovely savoury notes, salinity and lingering pickle”; and “bright, zesty, sharp” Gibson’s Italian Lemon. Fifteen Silvers completed the flight.

“Thank God the sugary sweetness is going away in flavoured gin,” Taylor breathed with a sigh of relief. “That was the most noteworthy thing for me. All the flavours are now becoming flavoured gin, rather than liqueurs. And there was an interesting mix with tropical, earthy, spicy, wine-y flavours; people are getting creative and doing interesting things.”

The Gin Masters 2025 – First Tasting judges

As the tasting approached the final flights, one Gold (Monkey 47 Sloe Gin) and a Master were uncovered in the Sloe Gin subcategory. Plymouth Sloe Gin was “sharp”, to the judges’ delight. “It’s unique and different, and would be great mixed,” said Kiely.

Then a flight of Gin Liqueurs were tasted. The quartet of medal winners ensured it was a strong finish to the tasting, with three Golds and a final Master for Edinburgh Gin Rhubarb & Ginger Liqueur. “The nose is beguiling; tart and sweet rhubarb with freshly grated ginger follows on the palate,” the judges noted.

With such broad variations of gin at different price points available in the gin category, it’s unsurprising the category continues to grow. It just goes to show the value of quality liquid to create a loyal fanbase – and long may it continue.
