Mother of Pearl’s paper bottles combine fashion with sustainability

Mother of Pearl, which produces a vodka and a gin, was founded in 2022 by hotelier and restaurateur Nic Hancock and fashion brand director Nicola Thompson-Hancock.

The grape-based spirits brand attended the Splash Paris fashion resort wear tradeshow on 28-30 June at the Salon Gabrielle, focusing on serving cocktails without the use of glass and combining fashion with sustainability.

The ‘No Glass by the Pool’ initiative aims to reflect the brand’s style through practical and modern Frugalpac paper bottles.

According to Mother of Pearl, the bottles are five times lighter than glass, made from recycled paperboard, and have a carbon footprint that is up to six times lower than that of glass.

Fully recyclable and easy to chill, the new bottles were designed for poolside sipping, resort bars, events, and eco-conscious venues.

For Thompson-Hancock, the event held personal significance: it represented a creative full-circle moment and a tribute to her roots as an international wholesale fashion director, where she previously collaborated closely with the Splash team.

“It felt like coming home,” she said. “Bringing Mother of Pearl to Splash wasn’t just about pouring great drinks, it was about reconnecting with a community that shaped my career, and introducing them to a new kind of luxury: one that’s sustainable, stylish, and spirited.”

The initiative follows the launch of Mother of Pearl in the UK in November 2024, available to British consumers through Master of Malt.

Mother of Pearl spirits are crafted from late-harvest Pinot Gris grapes with a unique distillation process, which includes filtration through coconut husk and charcoal. The process is said to ‘enhance the spirit’s creamy mouthfeel and refined flavour profile’.

The brand’s two spirits, Vodka of the Sea and Gin of the Sea, are tailored for health-conscious and female consumers. Gin of the Sea is made with Australian botanicals such as finger lime, Kakadu plum and sea herbs.

Catering to those with dietary sensitivities, Mother of Pearl’s spirits are gluten-free, low in calories and free from carbohydrates.
