Leonardo da Vinci inspires Bimber collection

English whisky maker Bimber has unveiled the latest additions to its Shoulders of Giants range, which pays homage to the ‘diverse tapestry’ of visionaries that have shaped our world.

Bimber shoulders of giants
The six new expressions are all bottled from single casks

This latest collection from the Shoulders of Giants series features six expressions, three of which are exclusive to the UK, while the other three will be available to consumers in Germany.

Drawn from Bimber’s growing inventory of single malt whiskies, each Shoulders of Giants release has been chosen to offer a different story both inside and outside of the bottle, with each honouring the creativity of an historic character through a ‘remarkable’ single cask expression that is said to reflect their unique artistic vision.

Bimber notes that every stage of its production process has been designed to produce a rich, fruit-forward whisky that is celebrated for its depth and complexity, and as such, each of the six expressions in this collection has been produced using Bimber’s traditional methods, including a seven day open-topped fermentation process and the use of directly fired copper pot stills.

Steve Rush, head of marketing and communications at Bimber Distillery, said: “At Bimber, we believe that true artistry knows no bounds. Just as Vincent van Gogh poured passion into every brushstroke, Monet revolutionised our perception of light, and Leonardo da Vinci imagined the impossible, engineering pioneers Karl Benz, Rudolf Diesel, and Nicolaus Otto redefined motion through innovation.

“At Bimber, we craft our whisky with that same spirit of inventive precision and dedication. These latest Shoulders of Giants releases are a testament to the craftsmanship behind our fruit-forward single malt London whisky – and to the quality and variety of the casks we use.”

The UK-exclusive editions have been inspired by and pay tribute to three figures from the world of art.

Vincent van Gogh is the inspiration behind The Dreamer, which celebrates his visionary spirit and lasting impact on the world of art.  It offers notes including toffee, vanilla, pineapple, orange peel and sweet oak. It has been bottled at 56.8% ABV, and only 335 are available.

Meanwhile Claude Monet’s ‘masterful touch’ is the inspiration behind The Impressionist – a whisky that reveals delicate layers of lemon drizzle cake, heather honey, sultanas, a subtle hint of spiced baked apples, and white pepper. It comes in at 57% ABV, and only 279 bottles are available of this ex-Bourbon cask aged whisky.

Finally, Leonardo da Vinci is the inspiration behind The Visionary. Aged in palo cortado casks, this whisky offers rich notes of Sherry-steeped dried fruit,  dark chocolate, maraschino cherries, ground black pepper, and warm wood spice. Clocking in at 57.3% ABV, there are 340 bottles available for purchase.

Each expression features ‘attention-grabbing’ artwork and biographical details that celebrate the accomplishments of these historical figures who have ‘dared to dream and defied status quos’.

For consumers in Germany, a trio of whiskies is also available, all of which have been inspired by some of the engineering pioneers who changed the course of history and pay tribute to the spirit of invention and mechanical genius, values that are said to echo Bimber’s own commitment to precision and craftsmanship.

Inspired by Karl Benz’s revolutionary invention of the automobile and his impact on global mobility, The Inventor reveals notes of butterscotch, orange peel, fudge, mixed spice, and tobacco leaf. It rests at 58% ABV and was aged in an American oak ex-Bourbon cask.

Rudolf Diesel’s pioneering development of the efficient diesel engine is celebrated in The Engineer. The 57.6% ABV whisky was aged in a fino Sherry cask and offers up notes including Sherry-steeped fruits, dark chocolate, vanilla, wood spice, and a whisp of smoke.

Finally, The Inventor delivers notes of dried fruits, caramel, honeycomb, golden syrup, and balsamic vinegar. This 57.9% ABV expression celebrates Nicolaus Otto’s groundbreaking innovation in engine technology, and was aged in an oloroso Sherry cask.

While the UK exclusives will be available through Bimber’s online shop from tomorrow (1 August) for an RRP of £95 (US$126) each, the Germany exclusives will be available through the brand’s German distributor, Kirsch Import, in the near future.
