CEO Marc Christensen filed the voluntary petition on 10 July at the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Utah.

Dented Brick formerly operated as the Mormon Tea Distillery and is owned by parent company Salt Lake City Distillery.

The petition estimates the business has assets of up to US$50,000 and liabilities of between US$1 million and US$10m.

Dented Brick employs 12 individuals. It has applied for a motion to use cash collateral for ongoing operating expenses, including payroll. It also included a list of critical vendors that require payment to continue the business’ operations.

A hearing to resolve these motions will take place today (14 July).

Founded in 2011, the Salt Lake City-based distillery produces whiskey, rum, gin and vodka. In 2020, it launched a US$1m crowdfunding campaign to grow its business and attract acquirers.

The site has an artesian well that provides access to water from the Rocky Mountains.

It also partnered with Casa Tequilera Dinastia Arandina to create a Tequila blanco, which is distilled in Mexico and brought to proof with Dented Brick’s limestone-filtered water.

The brand takes its name from a story about the person who discovered the site’s well. He was allegedly killed in a gunfight that left dents in the bricks of his home. Some of these bricks were incorporated into the distillery building.
