Suntory shelves Auchentoshan hydrogen plans
By Melita KielySuntory Global Spirits has scrapped plans to build a hydrogen site adjacent to Auchentoshan Distillery after failing to receive funding from the UK government.

The plans were put forward by Suntory Global Spirits and Marubeni Europower.
In April 2024, HyClyde Auchentoshan – the proposed partnership project – applied for government funding through the Hydrogen Allocation Round 2 (HAR2) decarbonisation fund, which is managed by the Department of Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ).
However, after being unsuccessful in the application, the project is being discontinued.
A statement from Suntory Global Spirits said: “Whilst Suntory Global Spirits and Marubeni are disappointed in this outcome, we would like to thank our local community again for their input and feedback during our community consultation events, as well as members of the community councils and West Dunbartonshire Council.
“Looking to the future, Suntory Global Spirits remains firmly committed to its ‘Proof Positive’ ambitions, including its aim to achieve net-zero carbon emissions throughout its value chain by 2040, and Marubeni is exploring the opportunity to contribute to the decarbonisation of local industry and transport, supporting the UK’s net zero ambitions and fostering innovation in renewable energy.”
Suntory has been progressing towards more sustainable ways of operating for some time.
In April this year, the group formed a new company in Japan as a solution for long-term water sustainability, called Water Escape.
Water Escape is based in Ashiya City, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan.
The company’s 2030 Water Commitments include expanding its water education programmes and initiatives, and collaborating with suppliers to improve water-use efficiency.
