Luxco launches smoked Tequila

Kentucky-based spirits producer Luxco has launched a new smoked Tequila brand called Cortada, which will make its US debut in Denver, Colorado.

Cortada, created by fourth-generation master distiller Graciela ‘Grace’ Gonzalez, is described as a premium Tequila ‘cut with a whisper of smoke’.

Made in Los Altos in the valley of Jalisco, the Tequila is made with 100% state-grown Blue Weber agave. After cooking, the agave is smoked using Mesquite and Mexican oak, giving the Tequila its smoky character.

Gonzalez said: “Cortada represents generations of masterful craft and innovation. It’s elegant, but also has a spicy side.”

Cortada is available in two varieties: blanco and reposado. Blanco is highlighted by notes of ripe pineapple, agave molasses, and a wood-fired spiciness, while the Bourbon barrel-aged reposado displays dark chocolate, pepper and clove notes.

Both Tequilas can be enjoyed neat and over ice, or mixed in cocktails such as a Margarita or an Old Fashioned.

Kayleigh Longo, brand manager of Cortada, said: “Cortada allows us to do something new with Tequila. Smoked spirits are igniting fresh creativity across the spirits world – and Cortada brings that bold innovation to Tequila.

“The way just a hint of smoke interacts with the agave makes it a must-try for anyone seeking a spicier sipping spirit or cocktail experience.”

Cortada Smoked Tequila is available exclusively in Denver, Colorado, and via e-commerce in partnership with Shared Pour.

The blanco has a suggested retail price of US$49.99, and the reposado retails for US$54.99.

Gonzalez commented on the launch: “Denver is a perfect launch city – a place with rich, cultural history that’s always pushing the envelope to create what comes next. I’m excited to see what the exceptionally inventive local mixologists create with Cortada.”

Luxco, operating under MGP Ingredients, reported a 16% sales drop in the fourth quarter of 2024.
