Dál Riata Distillery secures building warrant
By Miona MadsenAlmost two years after gaining planning approval, Campbeltown’s newly planned whisky distillery Dál Riata has been granted a building warrant.

The Argyll and Bute Council gave Dál Riata Distillery the green light to start construction on 5 June by issuing a building warrant.
The distillery project is led by co-founders Ronnie Grant and Iain Croucher, who bought the land on Kinloch Road, Campbeltown, in June 2021. The project was officially announced in February 2022.
Fast forward, the council granted the £4.5 million (US$5.5m) distillery planning approval in September 2023.
With planning permission and a building warrant now granted, work on the site is scheduled to commence before the end of 2025.
Dál Riata has a planned production capacity of 850,000 litres of pure alcohol per year and will be accompanied by a bottling company and extensive warehousing. The distillery also hopes to bring employment to the area.
Grant commented on the ‘ideal’ location for the distillery: “There is no better whisky town in Scotland than Campbeltown. We are getting to add to the wee toon’s rich distilling history with the creation of our own distillery Dál Riata.”
The distillery derives its name from the Kingdom of Alba, which existed during the sixth and seventh centuries. Dál Riata included regions such as Argyll, Islay, Jura, Mull, Ardnamurchan, Cowal, and the northeastern part of Ireland and Kintyre.
Campbeltown was home to around 30 distilleries until the 1920s, leaving only Glen Scotia and Springbank to survive into the next decade.
Croucher, who also owns independent bottler North Star Spirits, said: “Campbeltown is magnificent in just about every way. I holiday here twice a year with my wife and kids. Just so happens it’s also my favourite Scotch whisky region.”
