Stirling Council in Scotland has given Organic Architects permission to develop a distillery at Auchenbowie, near Bannockburn.

The distillery will be built in a ‘neglected’ walled garden on the grounds of A-listed Auchenbowie House.

Bari Reid, director at Organic Architects, which specialises in sustainable distilleries, said: “Receiving approval for this project is an important milestone and we’re excited to begin the work of bringing the Auchenbowie walled garden back into use.

“For decades, this area has stood empty and overgrown – but it has immense potential.

“Our design celebrates the character of the site and the rich history of the estate, while also delivering something new and relevant for today.

“The distillery buildings will sit within the garden walls like elegant Victorian greenhouses. At the heart of the design is a glasshouse overlooking a water garden, which doubles as a cooling system for the distillation process.

“It’s a project where sustainability, heritage and craftsmanship come together – and we can’t wait to see it take shape.”

Construction is due to start in 2026, with the site expected to begin distilling in 2027.

The multi-million-pound investment will create 15 direct jobs, with more opportunities expected across the wider local economy, particularly in agriculture, logistics and hospitality.

Another whisky producer that has also secured planning permission this year is Loch Lomond Group.

Earlier this year, SB reflected on 2024 to compile a list of 10 exciting distillery openings from last year.
