Bonhams to auction Macallan Lalique Six Pillars set

The Encyclopedic Whisky Collection auction is believed to be the ‘largest single-owner collection of spirits’ in Bonhams’ history and will go live on 26 June.

An American collector has built the collection over 25 years.

Bonhams has divided the collection, which it describes as “one of the world’s most comprehensive”, into 52 lots, featuring “a complete history of Scotland’s greatest whiskies and the best of American and Japanese whisky”.

Notably, the auction will feature a full set of The Macallan in Lalique Six Pillars. The partnership between the Scotch whisky brand and the French crystal maker lasted over a decade.

Each bottling is up for sale as individual lots, with ages ranging from 50 to 72 years. The auction estimate for each is between US$46,000 and US$75,000.

The collection also features The Balvenie DCS Compendium Chapters 1-5, marking the first time all five chapters have been offered in one auction.

The Balvenie launched the series in 2016 to honour malt master David Stewart. Each edition features five single cask whiskies from different decades, exploring themes such as ‘distillery style’, the ‘influence of oak’ and ‘secrets of the stock model’.

Estimates for these lots range from US$34,000 to US$50,000.

The collection also features expressions from other Scotch distilleries, such as a Bowmore Black from 1964, a Glenmorangie Pride from 1981, and a 50-year-old Glenfiddich.

Other highlights include the Karuizawa Aika Geisha Bourbon Cask 29 Years Old, estimated at US$9,000-US$14,000.

Its American whiskey lots include two 23-year-old Pappy Van Winkles and a 25-year-old Old Rip Van Winkle.
