Wemyss offers cask warehousing to trade

Gin and whisky maker Wemyss Family Spirits has opened a bonded warehouse in Scotland’s Central Belt, designed to cater to distillers.

The warehouse has two 1,000m² bonded cells on offer, which can hold around 12,000 casks each

Operated by the Wemyss family under a new subsidiary, Wemyss Bond, the warehouse invites whisky makers to connect following the debut of its storage facility, which has been developed by distillers for distillers.

Located just minutes from major motorway links, the Glenrothes-based facility is part of a significant expansion by the independent spirits group.

The family offers flexible and comprehensive cask management, drawing on more than 20 years of whisky-making experience. Siblings William and Isabella Wemyss launched their spirits venture in 2005 with the creation of Wemyss Malts and established their first distillery, Kingsbarns, in 2014.

Isabella, production director at Wemyss Family Spirits, said: “From our own experience, we know how frustrating it is for businesses to face delays and red tape, whether it’s waiting weeks for basic requests to be processed or dealing with inefficiencies that others face due to poor systems.

“That’s why we’ve created a facility that’s not just high quality, but high service. We offer the same care and speed to our clients that we expect for our own casks, no exceptions.”

Additionally, the company has invested in software that provides enhanced visibility into its inventory, enabling the firm to stay in control and respond quickly.

Isabella continued: “This is the kind of storage facility we wished we had when we needed it, and the service we are offering has been shaped by the challenges we faced as distillers and bottlers ourselves.”

The site

The site provides HMRC-approved bonded storage and a comprehensive range of professional cask services, including tanker-to-cask filling, vatting, regauging, reracking, sampling, and dispatch.

William, director of Kingsbarns Distillery, said: “We manage everything in-house, from receipt and storage to spirit handling, so our clients can trust that their casks are being looked after with the same care we give our own.

“Every cask is barcoded and tracked through our system, giving clients secure, real-time access to see where their stock is, what’s been done, and what’s next. Producers want control and visibility, and because we’ve been in their shoes, we’ve built this service around exactly those needs.”

The warehouse has two bonded cells available for lease, each measuring 1,000 m² and holding approximately 12,000 casks stacked eight high. Eight additional units are planned for development, with negotiable racking options. Flexible lease options range from a cask basis to full or partial cells.

The launch of Wemyss Bond also marks a broader strategic initiative by the family-owned spirits group to safeguard its operations and expand its infrastructure, enabling collaboration with similar producers throughout the UK and beyond.

In April this year, William Wemyss shared his thought on tariffs with The Spirits Business.
