The Scottish distillery and UK retailer Waitrose have collaborated to support a conservation charity dedicated to preserving the future of endangered wild Atlantic salmon and its UK habitats.

John Vine, spirits buyer at Waitrose, said: “Waitrose is delighted to be helping The Atlantic Salmon Trust with this unique collaboration along with Tamdhu. We all share an interest in ensuring the health of our environment, and, like Tamdhu, sustainability is a pillar of Waitrose’s work.

“This is an exceptional product, and so we are, I believe, delivering a truly appealing product proposition for our whisky-loving consumers with our collaboration with Tamdhu. This is a whisky people won’t be able to buy anywhere else.”

Tamdhu 12-year-old Atlantic Salmon Edition is aged in oloroso Sherry casks and bottled at 41.3% ABV.

The expression displays aromas of churros, vanilla oak, and spearmint leaf with notes of ripened banana, shortbread, and dried fruits on the palate.

Sandy McIntyre, distillery manager of Tamdhu, commented: “We are so grateful to Waitrose for working with Tamdhu to support this important cause. We’re excited to bring both our whisky and the Atlantic Salmon Trust’s valuable work to a wider audience of Waitrose whisky lovers.

“With Whisky Day coming up on 17 May and Father’s Day just around the corner too on 15 June, this is the perfect time to leap into the whisky aisle at Waitrose and help a good cause at the same time as enjoying a great whisky.”

Available exclusively in select Waitrose stores, online shop, and through Waitrose Cellar, the special edition single malt retails for £50 (US$66) for a 700ml bottle.

For every bottle sold, a donation will be made to the environmental charity.

Atlantic salmon decline

Across the North Atlantic, the Atlantic salmon species has declined by 70% since the 1980s and is now classed as endangered in Great Britain by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Mark Bilsby, CEO of the Atlantic Salmon Trust, said: “Wild Atlantic salmon are an amazing species telling us about the health of our rivers, coasts and seas, yet they face challenges that are causing them to become endangered and threatened with extinction.

“However, there is hope, as with the amazing support coming from Ian Macleod Distillers and the great team at Tamdhu, we can focus our efforts to understand salmon better and, crucially, help restore rivers to give salmon the best chance at thriving once again.

“By working together, we can all collectively give wild Atlantic salmon the future they deserve.”

Earlier this year, Tamdhu launched a residency visitor experience at the Rosebank Distillery in Falkirk.
