The new release concludes the McConnell’s series, which includes a five-year-old first-fill Bourbon cask-matured Signature and the Sherry Cask Finish.

A blend of Irish malt and grain whiskeys, the new expression was aged for five years in first-fill Bourbon casks before undergoing a finishing period in Cognac casks, selected by Graeme Millar, master distiller at McConnell’s.

Millar commented on the new release: “With the Cognac Cask Finish, we wanted to do something that truly sets us apart. Cognac casks aren’t a traditional choice for Irish whiskey, but that’s exactly why we pursued them.

“They offer a luxurious sweetness and unexpected depth, with layers of soft fruit, gentle spice, and a velvety finish that perfectly complements our blend.”

Millar continued: “This release is a true blend of innovation and heritage. By drawing on the rich legacy of the Cognac region, a tradition of craftsmanship that mirrors our own, we’ve created something that honours our 18th-century roots, but also pushes the boundaries of what is expected from Irish whiskey. Inspired by our past, to create future tasting experiences for whiskey lovers to enjoy.”

Offered at 46% ABV, the whiskey presents aromas of macerated orange peel, ripe banana, and vanilla, complemented by notes of candied lemons, icing sugar, flame raisins, blonde chocolate, dried pineapple, and ginger on the palate.

McConnell’s Cognac Cask Finish is now available at the Belfast-based distillery for £45 (US$60), followed by a launch in Ireland and the UK at the end of May.

At The Irish Whiskey Masters 2024, McConnell’s Signature was awarded a Master medal, while the series’ Sherry Cask Finish took home a Gold medal.
