Zacal Mezcal makes UK debut
By Miona MadsenIndependent Michoacán mezcal brand Zacal has launched in the UK with two expressions: Manso and Ensamble.

Founded by four friends, Zacal Mezcal champions sustainability, from organic agaves to minimal water usage and community partnerships.
Co-founders of the brand include: Phil Clayton, head of business-to-business at Meta; Andrew Maidment, former Wines of Argentina Europe director and advisor to Gaucho Restaurants; Ian McCaig, founder of Fiit fitness app, and Cri Osborne, former bartender and founder of start-up Front Foot.
The artisanal mezcal is made in partnership with third-generation mezcalero Milton Ochoa in Michoacán, Mexico.
Zacal mezcals are hand-distilled from organically produced magueys – Bruto and Manso – and roasted with local volcanic rock in an underground oven at the family-run Vinata.
Clayton said: “We are all incredibly passionate about mezcal and wanted to bring a fresh take on the spirit that respects provenance and process but also delivers a twist on the familiar. Known as the soul of Mexico, Michoacán is wilder and less gentrified than Oaxaca, with a deep cultural heritage, and it was this untamed spirit that drew us to the region.
“Michoacán’s distinctive terroir yields the two unique agave species used in our mezcals. The volcanic soil and rocks surrounding the Vinata infuse the agave with elevated nutrients, particularly potassium, intensifying the sweetness and flavour complexity. As the spirit less ordinary, Zacal invites drinkers to discover Michoacán’s essence, one sip at a time, and we can promise a completely unique experience for agave fans”.
The brand is making its UK market debut with two ‘lightly smoky’ expressions, now available for both the on-and-off-trade, as well as direct-to-consumer at the brand’s website.
Available for £69.50 (US$88), the ‘delicate’ Manso is made with 100% Manso De Sahauyo, an organic semi-wild ‘Cenizo’ agave harvested for three to five years, and sits at 45% ABV.
On the other hand, the ‘complex’ Ensamble sits at 50% ABV and is made with Manso De Sahauyo and Bruto agaves. It retails for £119.50 (US$152).
McCaig commented: “Today’s drinkers are looking for a more mindful and intentional way of enjoying spirits without a complete departure from indulgence. Mezcal is considered to be the healthiest alcohol choice, but not everyone is a smoke and leather aficionado, which is why we wanted to create a more approachable flavour profile – perfectly balanced for mixing without overpowering the overall experience.
“Zacal’s commitment extends beyond the spirit itself, and we champion environmental responsibility. Recycled glass bottles, a commitment to local suppliers, and minimal water usage showcase a deep respect for the land. We are currently working towards becoming carbon neutral by the end of the year, as well as developing a plan to support local communities in Michoacán”.
