Majestic to buy Enotria & Coe

UK-based Majestic has agreed to acquire Enotria & Coe as it aims to become the nation’s ‘pre-eminent’ supplier of beer, wine and spirits.

Enotria & Coe’s spirits portfolio accounts for 1,500 spirits producers, having started as a specialist in Italian wine.

The business also serves all drinks industry channels, including a 10,000-strong client base of independent retailers, fine dining, specialist bars and hotels.

With the acquisition, Majestic sees significant potential to further grow Enotria & Coe in tandem with Majestic Commercial, which is its existing specialist on-trade division, currently supplying more than 3,000 venues in the sector.

Majestic Commercial is also the company’s fastest-growing division, having posted double-digit sales growth in the past years. With Enotria & Coe operating alongside it, the company believes it has a ‘best-in-class, differentiated service and product proposition’ for the on-trade.

The deal also gives greater investment in technology, people and service across the two businesses, Majestic noted.

Majestic CEO John Colley described Enotria as a “business we have competed against and admired for a long time, with a quality proposition and cultural values that align very closely with what we already do”.

He continued: “We believe this is a compelling strategic combination and can see huge potential to further enhance Enotria’s proposition and profitability.”

Both Majestic Commercial and Enotria will continue to operate as standalone businesses following the completed deal.

“This combination is fantastic news for Enotria & Coe colleagues, customers, our business and our future growth ambitions,” added Enotria & Coe CEO Julian Momen.

“From the initial approach and subsequent discussions with Majestic, it has been obvious to me that there is much to admire in their business and their growth.

“More importantly, we have a similar business ethos, and our behaviours and focus on people means that we are fully aligned on building a successful business together for the benefit of customers and suppliers.”

The transaction – financial terms of which were not disclosed – is expected to be finalised in the coming weeks.

Over the past two decades, Enotria & Coe has acquired Wheeler Cellars (in 2008), The Great Wine Co (formerly Great Western Wine, in 2010) and Coe Vintners (in 2015).

At The Drinks Business Awards 2024, Majestic Commercial was named On-Trade Supplier of the Year.
