Last Friday (24 January), Storm Éowyn hit the Isle of Islay on the west coast of Scotland, causing damage to some of its distilleries.

Many distilleries in Islay issued a temporary closure announcement due to Storm Éowyn

As Storm Éowyn swept across Scotland on Friday 24 January, people were injured, buildings damaged, and thousands of homes were left without power.

‘The strongest storm’ to hit the UK in the last 10 years with wind gusts in excess of 100mph (160km/h) caused the Met Office to issue a red weather warning in parts of Scotland.

The storm caused damage to some of the island’s distilleries.

One of the distilleries damaged was Moët Hennessy-owned Ardbeg in Port Ellen, on the south coast of the island.

A distillery representative commented: “Unfortunately, we have had some damage to the distillery roof and sea wall due to Storm Éowyn. Thankfully everyone is safe, as we had already closed the site as a precaution.”

On social media, The Old Kiln Restaurant at Ardbeg also shared: “Due to damage sustained during Storm Éowyn, Ardbeg Distillery, including the visitor centre, shop, café, and the production areas, will be closed for the next few days.

“We are relieved to share that everyone is safe, and no one was hurt. However, there is significant debris across the site, and we need to fully secure the area before reopening to ensure the safety of all staff and visitors.”

On the day of the storm, many distilleries on Islay, including Bruichladdich, Caol Ila, Ardbeg and Bunnahabhain, issued an announcement on social media of a temporary closure due to the storm.

Caol Ila took to Facebook, stating: “Due to Storm Éowyn, and extreme weather, we have made the decision to close Caol Ila, today Friday 24 January. Our shop, café and bar will be closed all day and there will be no distillery tours taking place. If you already have a booking we will be in touch to rearrange or provide a refund.

“The safety and well-being of our employees and visitors are our top priorities we believe this is the most responsible course of action. Thank you for your understanding – please take care and stay safe.”
