Spirit Master: Batavia Highball
By Rupert HohwielerIndonesia’s Orang Tua was awarded the highest accolade in The Pre-Mixed, RTD & Hard Seltzer Masters 2024, a Master medal for its Batavia Highball.

Putting Indonesia on the map as a whisky-maker to take note of, in particular the island of Java, Orang Tua has ventured into the ready-to-drink sphere with a single-serve Batavia Highball.
The serve is also the first Highball to come from Indonesia as a ready-to-drink product, and carries an ABV of 4.8%. The convenience of the format is a popular one, and something the brand believes can pull in younger consumers.
Bringing a quality that can also hold its own in bars, Batavia Highball uses a local whisky blend, and comes packaged in a 180ml bottle. Noting trends towards less consumption, the Highball is made with a half shot of Batavia.
Whisky, and is low in alcohol, calories and sugar – making it ideal for the mindful drinker.
From convenience down to its character, Batavia Highball has ticked every box, and the judging panel at The Pre-Mixed, RTD & Hard Seltzer Masters 2024 agreed, awarding it the competition’s greatest honour – a Master medal in the Whisky/Whiskey-based round.
Batavia Whisky itself has grassy aromas with notes of sweet pears and butterscotch, and its Highball won over the judges, who said of the serve: “It has a light whisky flavour, refreshing, clean, crisp – easy to drink.”
Brand manager Cindy Chandra, spoke to The Spirits Business about the Batavia Highball’s triumph, and what it takes to become a spirits master.
How significant is your Master medal win at The Global Spirits Masters Competitions?
It shows the clear quality of the taste that the Batavia Highball brings as a quality whisky-and-soda mix, and, as such, how it’s been recognised internationally.
What has the reception for the Batavia Highball been like?
The Indonesian market always likes the taste of our new product, but overseas they are open to Batavia Highball as well. Our distribution is expected to reach 39 countries in the future.
What makes Batavia the best whisky for a Highball?
It’s the perfect local whisky, with both an outstanding aroma and palate. We select quality malt and grains, and mature the liquid in American and French oak casks, which provide an unforgettable taste. Batavia Whisky is made with real international whisky processing standards.
What can drinkers expect from the taste?
There’s a delicious light whisky flavour and crisp soda fizz in every sip. We also recommend it served cold, straight from the bottle or poured into a glass with ice. If you want an even more vibrant whisky flavour, you can mix it with a half to double shot of Batavia Whisky.
