Arcane Distilling rebrands amid sale

Brooklyn-based Arcane Distilling has been reacquired by its original owner nearly two years after the company suspended operations due to ‘funding challenges’.

After the deal, Arcane will axe its most recent slate of products, focusing instead on licensing technology

David Kyrejko has reacquired Arcane Distilling after founding the brand in 2015 and selling the business in 2021. Kyrejko’s engineering firm, The Engine Room, first conceived of Arcane as a means to extract and preserve the aromas and flavours of beer waste and reacquires the patent along with the brand.

Arcane announced the reacquisition and a rebrand as Arcane Technologies across its social media channels on 28 January, writing: “From the very beginning, this project has never been just about spirits — it’s always been about innovation.”

In 2019, the Engine Room spun Arcane off into a separate entity after which it was acquired by startup Analog Liquid. From there, it was reimagined and relaunched in 2022 as a line of beer-derived whiskies made using vacuum distillation. In February 2023, the brand announced that it was suspending production due to funding challenges and economic factors.

Vacuum distillation remains central to Arcane, which is now positioning the process as “a transformative tool for breweries, distilleries, and beyond”.

Products and designs developed as part of the rebrand, such as Arcane Alpha and Imperial American whiskeys, will be scrapped as the company aims to make its patent available for license on a sliding scale with an initial focus on non-alcoholic beer. The Engine Room will provide engineering and production support for these technologies.

While spirits will not be the sole focus of Arcane Technologies, the newest incarnation of the brand is not ruling out reviving original products such as Arcane Fernet which “holds a special place in the hearts of those who have been part of the brand from the beginning”.

As production remains suspended, Arcane Distilling is actively seeking new partnerships with breweries and distilleries.
