SB Advent: Wild Atlantic Irish Gin
As we edge closer to setting our ‘out of office’ alerts, we’re turning our attention to a distillery located the other side of the Irish Sea, which is set to have a very exciting 2025 indeed.
The Wild Atlantic Distillery is run by brothers-in-law and long-standing friends Brian Ash and Jim Nash, who are passionate about maintaining the long history of independent, traditional and craft distilleries in Ireland.
Wild Atlantic Irish Gin is created with a mix of traditional and unusual botanicals sourced from the waters of the Wild Atlantic Way in the the Atlantic Ocean, which provides the organic wild Irish seaweeds of sugar kelp and dillisk. These are hand-harvested from the waters of the Porcupine Bank by the Talty family in Co Clare, who have been hand-harvesting for more than 100 years.
In addition to its core expression, the distillery also produces a Wild Strawberry & Elderflower Gin, which boasts a hue as rosey as Rudolph’s nose, and is made by marinating strawberries and elderflowers in the brand’s signature spirit. The result is a sophisticated gin bursting with fruity and floral notes that rests at 40% ABV. Add a splash to your fizz on Christmas morning for a festive take on a Champagne cocktail.
However, if gin ain’t your thing, don’t worry – it isn’t the only spirit in this brand’s arsenal. It is also the maker of a Premium Wild Atlantic Amalfi Lemon Irish Vodka, a small batch spirit, handcrafted with real Amalfi lemons, using a natural process of extraction that captures the intense fragrance and balance of acidity that only the best lemons in the world can achieve.
In addition, Wild Atlantic Distillery has also just revealed its first whiskey, The IslandMen 1921. It will be released on 21 December, marking the first time since 1921 that whiskey has been made in County Tyrone and Derry, and coming just in time for the perfect last-minute gift.
