Chivas Brothers lodges plans for Islay distillery
The Scotch whisky arm of Pernod Ricard, Chivas Brothers, has officially submitted plans for its first Islay distillery to Argyll and Bute Council.
Following the company’s announcement to build its inaugural Islay distillery in October 2023, Chivas Brothers has submitted its proposal for the project to the local council.
The application was received by Argyll and Bute Council on 18 October and validated on 26 November 2024. The proposal also includes visitor facilities and road improvement works.
Brian MacAulay, production director at Chivas Brothers, commented: “We can confirm we have now submitted a planning permission application to Argyll and Bute Council for a site at Gartbreck Farm in Islay, which, consistent with our vision to shape the future of sustainable Scotch, will be carbon neutral in distillery operation from day one.
“We will continue to work closely with the community and local authorities to ensure that all voices are heard through this process in order to create a distillery that the people of Islay can be proud of while minimising and mitigating any direct or indirect impact on residents. We will await a decision on our application before further announcements are made.”
The planned distillery marks the first time Chivas Brothers will introduce an Islay whisky to its Scotch portfolio, which includes distilleries such as The Glenlivet and blended whisky brands Royal Salute, Chivas Regal and Ballantine’s.
As part of the company’s environmental efforts earlier this year, Chivas Brothers teamed up with local charities to protect and restore Scotland’s waterways.
Last year, the company pledged £60m (US$76m) to hit net zero.
