In her new role, Burston will focus on strengthening the trust’s initiatives, which include financial assistance, wellbeing services, and educational programmes for industry professionals.

Burston will take over the position from Carter, who has served as CEO of the charity since 2019.

The appointment comes as the industry navigates ongoing challenges.

Burston’s leadership is anticipated to introduce new strategies aimed at expanding the trust’s reach and impact, particularly in supporting current and former industry members who are experiencing hardship.

Guy Lawrence, chair of the trustees, said: “It’s great to be able to promote Nicky from within The Drinks Trust to be our new CEO. She brings a wealth of relevant experience that will help stand the charity in good stead for the future and all the challenges that brings.”

With 30 years of experience in the industry, Burston has worked in various roles in the drinks trade, including creating and running her own UK agency.

Most recently, she worked as a consultant supporting organisations in various senior leadership roles, from marketing and communications to sales and board strategy, across different areas of the drinks trade, from mineral water to spirits and craft beer.

Burston commented on her appointment: “Since I joined The Drinks Trust in 2020, it has been highly rewarding to be part of such a small but dynamic team, who have achieved so much in recent years, and I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to lead the charity into the future.

“There are going to be some tough challenges ahead, but I really look forward to reaching out to partners in the coming weeks to discuss how we can come together to address these challenges and support our colleagues in need.”

The Drinks Trust aims to work with partners and donors to support those in need within the drinks industry.

Burston steps into the new role in early December 2024.

At The Spirits Business Awards 2024, The Drinks Trust is sponsoring the Ethical Award.
