Eaux de Ferrand
By SB Staff WriterWhere tradition meets innovation, Ferrand brings audacity, creativity and passion to Cognac through the masterful fusion of classic techniques and modern flair.

Founded in 1989, Ferrand Cognac pays tribute to the Ferrand family. Elie Ferrand, who was born in 1630, started a 10‐generation tradition of naming the family’s first‐born sons after himself.
Established by Alexandre Gabriel, who has 35 years of experience in the field, Ferrand Cognac is dedicated to bringing back 19th-century traditions of producing Cognac.
Angélique Jullienne, marketing and communication director at Maison Ferrand, says: “We’ve conducted extensive research on old recipes and the cultural significance of Cognac, blending them with modern techniques to create unique products, each with a specific story.”
As well as being a distiller and blender, Ferrand also owns vineyards – nurturing 150 hectares in the Grande Champagne and Borderies regions of Cognac. Behind the company’s vision stands Gabriel, with his endlessly creative mind that dares to imagine and create delicious expressions.
From using pre‐phylloxera varietals to being the first in the category to re-adopt the old tradition of double-cask maturation, the brand’s DNA lies in innovation that honours the past and present.
Jullienne explains: “Alexandre created our 1840 Original Formula with historian David Wondrich to pay homage to the golden age of cocktails in the mid‐1800s, when Cognac was widely used for various iconic cocktail recipes, and replicating that old style of Cognac.”
Lesser-known varietals
“With our Ambré expression, we wanted to reintroduce and experiment with older, lesser‐known grape varietals like Colombard,” says Jullienne. “For the Double Cask Reserve, we sought to bring back the time‐forgotten tradition of ageing Cognac also in wine barrels. We use PX casks for the second maturation of the expression.”
Also, the Ferrand Renegade range experiments with Cognac aged in barrels that do not always meet the regulations of the spirit’s AOC. The offerings includes eaux‐devie aged in chestnut wood barrels, ex‐rum casks from Jamaica, and, for the latest edition, Renegade IV, oak casks shipped to Barbados for the second maturation.
In honour of the 10 generations of Elie Ferrand’s that had come before, 10 Générations Cognac was created to revive the style of Cognacs produced by Elie VIII. It was aged in French oak and Sauternes casks. Ferrand Cognac carefully ages very old and rare Cognacs in both dry and humid cellars, with many destined to be bottled as single casks, showcasing the diversity of Cognac through single grape varieties, single crus, specific casks, or exceptionally old vintages. Ferrand also offers prestigious editions such as Sélection des Anges and Légendaire, both of which highlight the exceptional expertise that Gabriel has honed over more than three decades as master blender.
Jullienne adds: “Ultimately, our mission is to showcase the versatility of Cognac and create delicious products in a community we love.” The brand welcomes trade members to discover the company’s communitydriven ethos at Mademoiselle Manor, home of Ferrand Cognac – and a poignantly special place for the brand, as the manor was passed down to Gabriel by Henriette Ranson‐Ferrand, the last heir of the Elie Ferrand family.
