Double Chicken Please reveals new concept

New York’s Double Chicken Please has overhauled the front room of its dual-concept bar in Lower East Side.

Now called Free Range, the space has been given a new look and a new menu.

The team said the aim of Free Range is to create a ‘distinctive and engaging environment inspired by collaboration, experimentation, and storytelling’.

Thought up by the bar’s in-house lead designer, Turkie Tsai, the refreshed space is described as embodying Double Chicken Please’s conceptual ‘design hacking’ approach of deconstructing and rebuilding.

Free Range’s centrepiece sees a large-scale, wall-mounted sculpture of a deconstructed chicken, created by Tsai. A ceiling installation, its aim is to make the space feel ‘interactive and visually captivating’.

Additionally, Double Chicken Please has collaborated with audio production company Pineapple Audio on the sound design, creating custom speakers to further enhance the multi-sensory experience.

For drinks, a new craft cocktail programme has been implemented where classic serves are given nostalgic twists inspired by classic cartoons.

Previously, the front room had served cocktails from the tap with Asian influences.

The new cocktails will incorporate unconventional flavours and unexpected ingredients, and feature ‘interactive tableside presentations’.

These include The Pooh (made with Fords Gin, forest honey, birch pine need, cereal and clarified milk); What’s up Doc (with Patrón Silver Tequila, Amaro Santoni, mastiha, carrot, orange, hazelnut and yoghurt); and the Space Dog, which combines a base of Diplomático Rum with ingredients such as coffee, taro, banana and pineapple.

The cocktails are priced between US$19-$21.

Free Range will also play host to collaborations, where guest bartenders will drop in for limited edition cocktails.

Meanwhile, for the hungry, a food menu is also on offer with dishes such as pig’s blood cake and stuffed chicken wings with Thai basil and sticky rice.

Double Chicken Please’s co-founder GN Chan said: ‘“It will be a dynamic platform where creative ideas and conceptual collaborations come to life, allowing artists, designers, and creators to push boundaries and experiment in ways that defy conventional norms.”

The bar’s backroom, The Coop, remains as it is with its menu of culinary-inspired signature cocktails such as French Toast.

At the 2024 Spirited Awards, Double Chicken Please was a finalist for Best US Cocktail Bar.

The bar placed number one in North America’s 50 Best Bars 2023. This year, it was ranked seventh on the list.
