Penderyn pauses production at third distillery

Welsh producer Penderyn has halted whisky production at its newest distillery in Swansea after the ‘slow economy’ caused a drop in demand for its products.

Despite having only been open for just over a year, the south Wales-based distillery has taken the decision to pause its production following a reduction in demand for premium products due to the slowing economy.

“We are aligning our spirit product with our forward sales forecast and will be looking to resume production as soon as possible,” said chief operating officer Neil Quigley.

Although whisky making has been paused, guests are still able to book tours at the distillery, which opened in May 2023 on the site of the former Hafod Morfa Copperworks in Swansea.

The buildings were restored alongside the construction of new facilities, including the new distillery and visitor centre, as part of a multi-million-pound project, with funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Welsh government, who contributed £4 million (US$5.19m) and £500,000 (US$ 648,995) respectively.

In addition to taking guests through the production process – including Penderyn’s unique Faraday stills – tours at the Swansea site also include an exhibition and short film discussing the Copperworks and the history of copper making in the region.

The distillery’s retail space has also remained open, and tastings and corporate events will continue to run as well.

The Swansea distillery is Penderyn’s third distillery in Wales. The first, and largest, is located in the Brecon Beacons National Park in the village of Penderyn, where the brand takes its name.

The brand’s second distillery was built in Llandudno, north Wales, and opened in 2021.

Last year, single malt Welsh whisky received UK GI status, which protects its name, authenticity and characteristics. Penderyn was one of the first four Welsh distilleries to be given the protected status, alongside In the Welsh WindDà Mhìle and Coles.
