Glenmorangie’s original twelve
Glenmorangie Distillery has reimagined its iconic flagship 10-year-old single malt. The core expression has been given two extra years of maturation, creating The Original 12-year-old, a luscious new flavour pinnacle that turns up the volume of the classic.
Since the 1960s, the Glenmorangie 10-year-old has been an unmistakable yellow-and-orange-labelled single malt icon. In the 1980s, this notion caught the attention of Glenmorangie’s director of whisky creation, Dr Bill Lumsden.
“In 1984, when I was studying for my PhD in Edinburgh, I tasted single malt Scotch whisky for the first time,” reminisces Dr Lumsden. “That whisky was Glenmorangie. I’ll never forget my first magical sip and how I became beguiled by its complex range of flavours.
“However, my team and I recently started to wonder whether we could reimagine our flagship expression, The Original, for even more deliciousness. The result is The Original 12 Years Old. Smoother, creamier and even more complex – I like to think it ‘turns up the volume’ on our signature whisky’s classic notes of orange, vanilla, peach, and honey,” adds Dr Lumsden.
More than 175 years after the distillery was founded, Glenmorangie uses endless imagination and five key ingredients – wood, water, barley, yeast and time – to craft some of the most creative single malts available. Crafted in the distillery’s giraffe-height stills and aged in Bourbon casks, The Original has always served at the heart of the distillery.
The whisky creators at Glenmorangie are constantly looking for new ways to bring unique flavours to their single malts and, spelling good news for whisky lovers the world over, they dare to reinvent classics. Living by the motto ‘What if?’, the team’s dedication to challenging themselves perfectly aligns with the single malt category’s constant need for innovation.
After conducting experiments, the whisky creation team at Glenmorangie discovered that the two extra years of ageing their core whisky resulted in a silkier and creamier palate, catapulting The Original’s much-loved notes of orange, honey, vanilla and peach to a new pinnacle of flavour.
Glenmorangie The Original 12-year-old has already been recognised for its ‘swirling kaleidoscope of taste’ with a prestigious Gold medal at the 2024 World Whiskies Awards, a testament to its exceptional quality and appeal.
Staying true to The Original 10-year-old, the 12-year-old expression is offered at 40% ABV, and in the same price range at £40 (US$51). The reimagined classic is now available to purchase on the distillery’s website and visitor centre, as well as nationwide in the UK from August.
