Lonkero long drink debuts in UK

England-based startup Lonkero Drinks has launched a Finland-inspired long drink made with gin, grapefruit and botanicals.

The drink has secured on-trade listings in Scotland

Inspired by Finland’s ‘eccentricity and the love of the outdoors’, Lonkero is offered at 5.5% ABV as a refreshing, pint-sized alternative to beer and cider.

The ‘full-frontal Finnish experience’ is designed for festival-goers, summer garden parties, and those who want a ‘refreshing change from the norm’.

Described as ‘the national drink of Finland’, Lonkero translates to ‘long drink’ in Finnish. The serve was allegedly created in 1952, when sports fans worldwide travelled to Finland for the Olympic Games. The host country introduced a fast-to-serve gin-based drink with grapefruit and soda water to keep the visitors entertained.

Lonkero Drinks offers a twist to the Finnish classic with additional botanicals, a pinch of pine and lime.

The startup won Best New Alcohol Drinks Start Up at this year’s In-Drinks show and has also secured a partnership to sponsor Edinburgh Street Food’s outdoor cinema.

Lonkero has gained listings at Teuchters Landing in Edinburgh and Fringe Festival venue Summerhall.

“We are delighted with the launch of our brand Lonkero or, as we like to call it ,‘The Long Finnish’,” said Joe Harris, co-founder and director. “We spotted a gap in the market for consumers who seek a pint-sized, refreshing alternative to beer or cider.

“We knew we had something special with Lonkero, but to see this support from venues, partners and customers is incredible. Our team can’t wait to see the Lonkero word spread across the UK this summer.”

Lonkero is available on the company’s website, with a six-pack retailing for £17.99 (US$23) and a 12-pack for £29.99 (US$39).

The demand for Finnish long drinks has recently increased among consumers and investors. In May this year, Jay-Z invested in The Long Drink Company, which is already supported by actor Miles Teller and Norwegian DJ Kygo.
