Ian Macleod reveals Islay distillery details
Laggan Bay, which Ian Macleod Distillers is building in partnership with independent bottling company The Islay Boys, will be the 12th whisky distillery on the island.
Planning permission for the distillery was first granted in 2022, with construction currently under way and expected to be completed in 2025.
The Islay Boys is owned by Mackay Smith and Donald MacKenzie.
“I am delighted to be partnering with my friends, The Islay Boys, to build Laggan Bay distillery,” said Leonard Russell, managing director at Ian Macleod Distillers. “It’s a very exciting project, which will allow us to offer a brand-new Islay single malt before the end of the decade.”
Additional details will be released later this year, and those attending Fèis Ìle 2024 can learn more by visiting The Islay Boys’ brewery, Islay Ales at Glenegedale, which sits opposite the distillery site.
With regards to sustainability, the distillery will feature wetlands to manage its liquid waste and provide sanctuary for local wildlife. It is also working with Islay Energy Trust and Scottish Power to explore renewable energy options.
Laggan Bay will be the 12th distillery on Islay, joining Ardbeg, Ardnahoe, Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila, Kilchoman, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Portintruan from Elixir Distillers, and Port Ellen, which reopened in March after 40 years.
Ian Macleod’s portfolio of spirits includes Glengoyne, Tamdhu, Edinburgh Gin and the recently revitalised Rosebank in the Scottish Lowlands. After a four-year restoration project, Rosebank Distillery will reopen to the public this summer.
