George Dickel adds to bottled-in-bond series
The 12-year-old whiskey is the fifth bottled-in-bond release from Diageo-owned Tennessee brand George Dickel.
Few offerings present the age to price equation of George Dickel Bottled in Bond, and the Tullahoma, Tennessee distiller has announced the latest release in the series, a 12-year-old whisky distilled in the spring of 2011.
George Dickel Bottled in Bond debuted in 2019 with a 13-year age statement and US$36 pricetag. The age of the whiskey has fluctuated over the years, while the price has crept up slightly. The 2024 release is listed for US$45.
“Something that makes this series so special is that whisky fans have the rare opportunity to try expertly crafted bottled in bond offerings at a great price,” director of George Dickel and luxury whiskey, Nicole Austin, said.
Bottled at 50% ABV, the latest bottled-in-bond release delivers notes of overripe cherries, macadamia nut cookies and toasted oak. Like preceding releases in the series, it is made from a mash bill of 84% corn, 8% rye, and 8% malted barley and chill charcoal mellowed.
“Our bottled-in-bond offerings are a testament to the quality of our inventory and the commitment at Cascade Hollow to consistently produce outstanding whisky,” Austin said. “I can’t wait for both old and new fans of the series to try it.”
The Bottled in Bond Act of 1897 requires all whiskeys that carry the designation to be bottled at 50% ABV, aged at least four years, and drawn from barrels filled in the same distilling season. The style has taken off in recent years as craft distillers see their spirits come of age, while larger producers, like George Dickel, are able to add to the category with older whiskeys at largely affordable prices.
Jack Daniel’s added a bonded rye to its line up this past March after launching a pair of bottled-in-bond whiskeys in 2022.
In 2018, Austin was appointed general manager and distiller at Diageo-owned Cascade Hollow Distilling Co, which produces George Dickel. The move was a part of Diageo’s sharpened focus on Tennessee whiskey. Austin previously worked for The Oak View Spirits consulting firm and Kings County Distillery, where she was master blender.
