Dark Matter auctions cask-aged rum

Scottish producer Dark Matter Distillers will auction the first nine bottles from its new Biologist Series.

Bottle number one from Dark Matter’s Biologist Series will be sold by Rum Auctioneer

The bottles will be available via online platform Rum Auctioneer until 3 January.

Each expression in the range was named after a renowned person from the science world.

Bottles one to nine from Cask No. 009 were filled into a oloroso Sherry hogshead at 63.5% ABV in 2016. The seven-year-old liquid was bottled at a cask strength of 62.1% ABV.

It marks the second time Dark Matter has put its rum up for auction since its ‘hugely successful’ Physicist Series in 2021, which sold for £41,800 (US$53,360).

Jim Ewen, managing director of Aberdeenshire-based Dark Matter Distillers, said: “The Biologist Series is a direct follow-on from our first cask release in 2021 with ‘The Physicist Series’ and will be completed next year with the third and final ‘The Chemist Series’, forming a limited edition science series set.

“Bottles 01-09, from Cask 009, from Scotland’s first rum distillery, represent another wonderful opportunity for collectors and we’re excited at the prospect of seeing the auction unfold over the Christmas period.

“We’re delighted to partner again with Rum Auctioneer for this exclusive release and The Biologist Series offers another very limited opportunity for the enthusiast or collector.”

Dark Matter Distillers became Scotland’s first rum distillery when it launched in 2015.

Rum has been touted as the next big category to watch on the secondary market.
