Desolas Mezcal takes on Texas
Desolas Mezcal has entered the Texan market through a distribution deal with Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits.
The move follows Desolas’ debut in the Canadian market last month and a range of partnerships for the brand in the Hamptons in July.
Desolas handcrafts its mezcals from the Salmiana agave plant grown in San Luis Potosí in Mexico, giving a low-smoke botanical flavour.
Salmiana agave, known as the ‘green giant’, has a low yield of liquid despite its impressive size. The piñas are cooked in above-ground ovens known as ‘hornos’ instead of the usual underground pit.
The mezcal produced is described as having a smooth and balanced flavour with notes of citrus, black pepper and vanilla.
“Since launching Desolas, we have been focused on growing the brand methodically,” said the brand’s founder and CEO, GG Mirvis. “As we expand into new markets, Texas is the natural next step for us. We are so excited to work with Southern Glazer’s to establish a presence in Texas and continue the brand’s growth.”
Desolas is said to be inspired by the traditional time-honoured techniques of mezcal production, the artisanal process of crafting the agave spirit, the natural elements of the sun and the land, and a focus on the ‘deliberate journey’ of creation and discovery.
As part of the distribution deal, Desolas will now be sold at Spec’s, Texas’ biggest liquor retailer.
Desolas Mezcal Blanco secured a Gold medal in The Tequila & Mezcal Masters 2023 blind-tasting competition, which was awarded in the 100% Agave Mezcal – Blanco – Artisanal – Salmiana heat.
