Only 10% of women see positive industry change
By Alice BrookerOne in 10 women working in the alcohol industry believe there has been significant positive change towards female employees over the past five years, a new survey has revealed.

Membership organisation Women of the Vine & Spirits (WOTVS) partnered with research firm Deloitte to release the results of its second Women Raising the Bar Study into diversity in the beverage alcohol industry.
Last year, the study found similar results, with nine in 10 women feeling significant positive change had not occurred in the industry’s attitudes towards females in recent years.
The aim of the study was to measure company performance against diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) benchmarks going forward.
“In previous DEI studies, the beverage alcohol industry historically was lumped into the larger food and beverage category, making it very difficult for our unique industry to successfully measure where we stand and determine how we move forward,” said Deborah Brenner, founder and CEO, Women of the Vine & Spirits.
“Through our collaboration with Deloitte, we now have two years of concrete data highlighting the state of DEI in our industry. This measurement tool not only provides insights on the state of our industry, but it can better inform our actions to propel long-lasting change.”
The research also found fewer than one in five women would give their company top marks for improving the workplace through DEI efforts, with 36% responding that steps made had been unsuccessful, not very successful or ‘neutral’ when asked about this.
‘A majority’ of respondents believe women (55%) and people with diverse backgrounds (74%) are underrepresented in their company’s leadership team.
Fifty-seven per cent of survey respondents said their company’s culture was very accepting of their family and personal commitments.
Kimberly Betts, Deloitte’s global consumer industry DEI leader, added: “This study offers smart strategies to help beverage alcohol industry companies make positive progress toward their DEI goals.”
