Bruichladdich has joined forces with creative studio Lazerian to make the sculpture, called Message in a Bottle, which is available to view for two weeks from today (24 April).

The two-metre-tall sculpture is crafted from a combination of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) materials and seeded paper, and has environment and sustainability ‘at its heart’.

Liam Hopkins, founder of Lazerian, said: “Working with Bruichladdich on the Message in a Bottle project was an honour and a pleasure. We share similar values when it comes to environmental sustainability, and it was inspiring to create something together that has so much potential to inspire positive change in our communities.”

The sculptures PET materials have been made from 100%-recycled plastic bottles, which have been shredded and melted down to create an incredibly durable material that is strong enough to stand the test of time. The use of recycled plastic ensures that less waste is created.

At first glance, the sculpture appears to be a plastic tree inside a bottle, but upon closer inspection, it’s revealed to be ‘a representation of the circular economy’.

The sculpture has been designed to make the viewer think about the future of the planet, while also encouraging passers-by to subscribe to Bruichladdich’s mantra of ‘thinking big and starting small’.

The sculpture also invites its audience to make a promise, pledge, or pen a quote onto seeded paper and place it in to the bottle, which the brand notes has the potential to ‘grow into something beautiful, just like the trapped tree inside the bottle’.

Through its interactive elements and inspirational message, this piece is said to have the potential to bring attention to important environmental issues while inspiring positive change in our communities.

Through the idea of ‘creating another bottle’, the sculpture also aims to encourage the viewer to look at the transformative power of our everyday choices and decisions.

Bruichladdich was the first Scotch distillery to be awarded B Corp certification.

Its recent sustainable efforts include launching a ‘pollution eating’ mural in east London, and removing the outer packaging from its core single malt brands.
