Fortnum & Mason opens gin distillery

Luxury London grocer Fortnum & Mason has unveiled a dedicated gin distillery as part of a new experiential hub offering food and drink experiences.

The ‘innovative’ and sustainable space has been designed to encourage local shoppers and tourists to collaborate with guests from the culinary world in a state-of-the-art food and drink studio on the flagship Piccadilly store’s third floor.

Built in partnership with The Craft Distilling Business, the Made in Piccadilly Distillery is co-founded by Matt Servini and Vanessa Rapier, and boasts a fully operational vacuum still called Amalthea.

Fortnum & Mason CEO, Tom Athron, said: “Ever since William Fortnum met Hugh Mason and started a business, Fortnum & Mason have been in search of extraordinary new food and drink experiences, so it seems only natural to create a home dedicated to this search.

“With the launch of our new food and drink studio and all that comes with it, we are looking forward to a new era of retail with sustainability, innovation and customer experience at its very core.”

The ‘beautifully designed’ copper still will create two brand new small-batch gins – a dry gin and a pink gin, as well as seasonal options, tinctures and essences.

These bespoke recipes will become the house pours across Fortnum’s hospitality sites.

Distillers working in the area will be on hand to talk through the distilling process and encourage interaction via a sensory station, where customers learn about gin flavour profiles, botanicals and aromas.

Customers will also be able to watch first-hand as their bottles are being filled and will be encouraged to keep their bottle to refill with future batches.

There will also be the option to personalise the bottle, and take part in tastings, live food-theatre, and discussions.

Last week, the design plans for Blue Run Spirits new distillery in Kentucky were revealed.
