Don Julio releases second Ultima Reserva
By Georgie CollinsIn celebration of Día de los Muertos (2 November), Diageo-owned Don Julio has released a second bottling of its extra-añejo Tequila, Ultima Reserva.
The re-release of the premium Tequila is in honour of the brand’s late founder, Don Julio González.
The limited edition extra-añejo Tequila is made with the final agave harvest planted by González and his family in 2006, which was reserved for this particular distillation. Each bottle is specially labelled to mark this year’s harvest.
“It’s been 10 years since the passing of our late founder Don Julio González and we are proud to honour his legacy by releasing the second bottling of Tequila Don Julio Ultima Reserva,” said Christina Choi, senior vice-president of Tequila, Diageo North America.
“This liquid is truly so rare and special that we’re continuing to release Tequila Don Julio Ultima Reserva in highly limited quantities each year, allowing us to preserve Don Julio González’s ultimate legacy as long as possible.”
Don Julio Ultima Reserva is a 36-month-aged extra-añejo, and is said to be ‘the pinnacle of the brand’s portfolio of luxury Tequilas’.
The limited edition spirit was made using the solera ageing method, which combines and matures Tequilas of different characteristics finished in various casks, allowing the final agave harvest to remain ‘at the heart’ of this rare extra-añejo Tequila.
The liquid was rested in oak barrels previously used to age Bourbon, and finished in Madeira wine-seasoned casks. The result is a spirit that features a nose of toasted oak and caramel, followed by hints of apricot and orange. It offers honeyed agave on the finish.
After releasing 4,000 cases of the first batch of Tequila Don Julio Ultima Reserva last year, the second bottling is now available in limited quantities, with an RRP of US$499 for a 750ml bottle.
Don Julio also created a limited edition expression finished in orange wine casks last summer.
The brand was the third best-selling Tequila brand in 2021.
